Josephine Creek and Napoleon Falls, 3A II & 3A I

I'm a Canyoneer from northern New Mexico. I know Klaus and Alden electronically. I've wanted to get out and do some So Cal canyons and plan to be out in that area for canyons 2/21-23/14. It’s possible that some fellow New Mexicans may also come. I'm hoping to have Alden and some other So Cal Canyoneers join me (us) for a few days of canyons. I (we) have all the skills and gear necessary to descend these canyons, but I won’t do canyons alone and it's always nice to have folks along who are familiar with them.

The plan for this day is to do Josephine Creek (beta at http://www.dankat.com/advents/joseph.htm) and Napolean Falls (beta at http://ropewiki.com/index.php/Napoleon_Falls).

I'll be staying in the Sierra Madre area. I'd like to start from the trailhead by 9am.

Everyone will be responsible for his/her own safety and personal gear.

I will bring a 220' rope and 240' pull cord. I will also have 75' of webbing and several rapides.

We'll need a second 200'+ rope. Everyone should always be carrying at least 30' of webbing and a few rapides.

Great last rappel in Josephine. Used culvert above canyon for ascending practice.

Boo hoo! I ended up with a patch of poison oak on my arm, despite wearing long sleeves. Hope the rest of you avoided it!

Lots of fun, especially that last rappel. Decided against using the very dead bush at Napoleon. Ground moved a lot when I shook the bush.

That is correct. Though Augie is going directly to the JC parking spot.

If we're starting from the parking area for Josephine Creek, I'll meet everyone there. The plan is to be ready to head out from the cars by 9 am as I understand it.

My map of both canyons is here: http://caltopo.com/map?id=4R6O. Brett, my cell is 619-9975230. Barb and I will be driving from SD. If you post you # or send it to me, I will let you know if we are delayed. There's heavy fog this morning.

I sent an e-mail to all attendees and wait list folks with my cell and where I'm staying. Let me know if you didn't get that e-mail.

Just read your need for second rope--I have 200', 150', 120' ropes, bags, mucho webbing, rapides.

Agreed that folks should know how to add friction. If a rock hits you in the head and knocks you out, you can't add friction. I, too, have seen issues with the self-belay not completely stopping the person or locking-up on the rope, but if one is knocked out at least slowing the descent is something. I've had pretty good luck using self-belay with an asymmetric prusik. Alden notes that it is easy for folks to knock rocks down from above and the rappeller to knock rocks loose. Klaus' suggestion of extending the rope is a good one, but it's a judgement about how far to extend. I've seen a person at the bottom some distance back giving a Fireman's and a rock fell, broke into 3 pieces and they shot past him, but fortunately did not hit him. We'll survey the conditions and make the best choice to minimize the chances of injury or issues to the rappeller and bottom-belayer. I'll bring some FRS radios so we can easily talk top to bottom.

Thanks, John. I added a location that was in the list that seems a good place to meet for the trip up the Big Tujunga Canyon Rd.
