Bonita Falls 3AR II

EXPERIENCED or TRAINED ONLY: Due to the nature of the semi exposed rappel transition between the 1st and 2nd rappel and the difficult start of that 2nd rappel this is not for beginners. Experienced canyoneers only please. Participation is at the discretion of the event host.

Summary: Bonita Canyon is a short but sweet canyon in the Lytle Creek Area. Brennen provided the initial data on the canyon, as written it requires a long approach. The uCanyon beta below describes a loop route that removes the long shuttle and drops you into the heart of the canyon. This loop approach has been the route that has been used the most over the last several years.

We need to change the rating on this canyon... an A? Seriously?
Tina got so wet... it should be at least a B.

The R was appropriate though. Great rappels, but precarious starts.

      February 10, 2014

    • John G.

I'd go with 3B PG13 II If PG13 was on the scale.

I almost ran late in the morning and realized that I only had Freddy and Shane's numbers and since they weren't coming. I wasn't going to be able to let anyone know what was going on.

    Who's bringing what length rope?

My humble suggestion, for a group this size and the somewhat small anchor stances, is to have enough rope to set the whole route as the first couple people descend. In other words, the first people to go down have the majority of rope and fix lines all the way to the bottom. Those following won't have to wait for ropes to be set, they only have to deal with retrieval. We will need 3 x 200' and a couple of short lines in the 40-50' range, which I will bring. This should help keep things moving and prevent people from getting cold while waiting for others to rappel.

Wetsuits? Or is this a dry canyon?

    February 6, 2014

    • Steven S.

There's definitely water in it but don't know if we'll be in long enough to need a wet suit.

    What's the R rating for?

    January 22, 2014

    • Klaus G.

We're not blaming YOU, Freddy ... just curious if you found a reason for the 'R' rating that UCanyon is using ... 'cause we couldn't find one.

      January 22, 2014

    • Freddy

I didn't think you blaming me. I'm glad you said something cause you what a sensitive guy I am.

      January 22, 2014

  • Running R.

Please stay in the water course when rappelling. The moss in this canyon is dying from the canyoneers going through it. Staying in the water course also provides more fun. We also brought a trash bag and cleaned up what we could. Have Fun!

I have a 200' 9.6mm canyon rope; we can leave it in the car if we end up with enough 8.3mm rope.

Looking forward to meeting all of you.

    January 22, 2014

    • Freddy

      We'll have enough.
