League Rules - Fall 2011

Welcome to the Fall 2011 Spades League with Chicagoland Card Players!
We have a huge league this season, so there are some changes to our normal format. We will be separating the league into two divisions and having a new playoff format where all teams will participate. There will be approximately 8 weeks of regular season games during which each team plays one match of 3 games each week. The winner is declared when one team wins 2 games, but you must still play all 3 games, since all games will count in the rankings – number of matches won followed by number of games won. Every attempt will be made to have all teams play against every team in their division. The winners of each league will be awarded a prize (yet to be determined) and the overall rankings will be used to determine the seeding into a 16 team double elimination playoff tournament. The playoff tournament will last approximately 5 weeks… a team is eliminated once they have lost 2 matches. More details will be provided later in the league. Here are some general rules for the league:
1. Game play: I assume that everyone knows how to play spades, but here are our rules. We play with a standard 52 card deck – Aces are high, 2’s are low and there are no jokers. Each game is to 500 points. You may not lead trump until it has been broken (either by someone cutting in or if all you have left is spades). We play with sandbags, which DO count as points when it comes to the total score. Once you accumulate 10 bags, you lose 100 points (though the bags do round up). Nil is worth 100 points. If a player who bid nil takes any tricks, those tricks do not count toward their partner’s bid, are automatically counted as bags, and you lose 100 points. There is no passing of cards, there is no minimum bid for a team, and blind nil is NOT allowed. Bidding and taking all 13 tricks is considered “moon” and is worth 200 points. A 10 bid is just that, a 10 bid… worth 100 points if you make it - there is no “10 for 2”. The first dealer is decided by everyone drawing a card – the highest black card wins the deal, if the cards are a tie, spades beats clubs.
2. Table Talk: Table Talk is NOT allowed. This means that you may NOT discuss bidding with your partner, you may NOT say things like “2, maybe 3” or “2 and a possible” when bidding, and you may not talk about the current hand in play regarding what cards to play. After the hand is over, you may discuss the hand that just occurred – what should have happened, what could have happened if something else was led, etc. You may NOT, however, talk about the strategy for how to bid the next hand (for example saying “oh, they have 8 bags, we should try to bag them now”). If accidental table talk causes a problem or changes the outcome of a hand… call me over immediately.
3. Renege Penalties: If you play an illegal card (such as throwing off or trumping when you must follow suit), there is no penalty if someone catches the renege before the end of the following trick. If it happens, back up and swap out the cards that should have been played. The person that played the card out of turn is required to leave that card face up on the table and play it at the first legal opportunity. If the renege is not caught before then, a 1 trick penalty can be applied at the discretion of the opposing team (meaning they can give to or take away from the offending team 1 trick at the end of the hand). If the renege has caused the hand to be unplayable or significantly changed the outcome of the hand, call me over and there will be a point penalty consequences added. I WILL NOT tolerate intentional reneges to give your partner information or to try to get out of a hand you think you will be set on. If you’re that kind of player, you may play by yourself in the corner or with other 4 year olds, but not with us.
4. Missing weeks/Arriving late: If you know you will need to miss a league night, tell me as soon as possible (weeks in advance is preferable) and we will try to arrange a sub to play in your place or to reschedule the game for a different night with your opponents. Substitute players are NOT allowed in the playoffs. If you need to miss a playoff week you must either reschedule for the same week or forfeit. If you cannot attend at the last minute, call me or text me at 773-682-8941 as soon as possible. I will attempt to arrange a sub or contact the opponents, but if it is too late to get a sub or reschedule, you will forfeit the match. Games start at 7 pm every week. If you are running late, let me know as soon as possible. If you have not arrived by 7:20 pm, you will forfeit the first game of the match. If you have not arrived by 7:45 pm and not contacted me, you will forfeit the entire match.
Please keep in mind that this is supposed to be a FUN league. We have a LOT of people this time, so try to remember that I have a lot of things on my plate. Remember that the divisions are only determining the seeding into the playoffs, not whether or not you will be in them… so feel free to whine about strength of schedule issues, but my response will likely be to have another glass of wine. If there is a problem, I will attend to it and do my best to resolve the situation as fairly as possible… but in the end, I am the end-all-be-all queen of the spades league and you have to listen to me!  I reserve the right to defer decisions that I feel I cannot be impartial in making. I also reserve the right to ask you to leave if you’ve pissed me off enough. Just be grateful I’m not saying “off with his head!”
