External Event - Humanism in Africa - Where have we come? Where are we going?

Bob Churchill will discuss existing Humanist organisations in Africa, what motivates them, what they are doing, and the issues they face. He will then open discussion on the prospects for Humanism in the Sudanese context.

The lecture will case-study neighbouring Uganda, where he has recently worked for several months with the Ugandan Humanist Association. Bob will discuss religious and other issues in education, health and social life, the relationship between democracy, corruption and secularism, and how Humanists are responding to these challenges. He will then lead discussion, which may cover Humanism in Africa, religion, human rights and education; and in particular how humanists and others living in the UK can collaborate to support Humanist groups in Africa.

Bob Churchill spent most of the last 12 months in Uganda, working with the Uganda Humanist Association (UHASSO). Prior to this he was employed at the BHA for over three years, as Head of Membership. On returning to London, he has recently taken up a new position as Communications Officer for the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU).

"Open Themes is a group of Sudanese intellectuals and activists, whose main aim is to promote the values of democracy, secularism and human rights in all its manifestations. The ultimate objective is to contribute effectively in bringing about a Sudanese Age of Enlightenment. Although the Group is primarily seized with intellectual matters, it is aware of the interconnections within political, social and cultural spheres. It was established four years ago and is based in London."
