What is a CFI Secular Celebrant?
Secular Celebrants officiate at marriage and commitment ceremonies, funerals, memorials, and other celebrations of life's milestones. As many as 20% of Americans are unaffiliated with any religion, yet our celebrations and ceremonies are dominated by religious leaders and civil officials.
CFI created our Secular Celebrant Program to address this problem by training secular people to officiate for nonreligious marriage and commitment ceremonies, funerals and memorials, and other celebrations of the milestones of life.
How can I become a CFI Secular Celebrant?
You can become a certified CFI Secular Celebrant by attending this special training session and meeting a few other requirements. Read the complete list of Requirements for CFI Secular Celebrant Certification.
Can Secular Celebrants Legally Solemnize Wedding in Michigan?
CFI–Michigan is currently in the process of challenging the discriminatory nature of the Michigan Marriage Statute (MCL 551.7), which only allows “Ordained Ministers of the Gospel” and a very limited set of Civic Officials to solemnize marriages.
CFI-Michigan is seeking to persuade the State of Michigan to amend the statute to permit secular celebrants to solemnize weddings. If such a legislative solution proves unattainable, CFI is prepared to bring a law suit to achieve that goal.
While CFI Secular Celebrants cannot currently solemnize weddings in Michigan, they will be able to very soon, as we are confident our advocacy, or if necessary legal efforts, will be successful. So, we encourage you to start your certification process now!
