Environments of transitional fossils between fish and amphibians in Pennsylvania and New York, can now be assessed from newly discovered fossil soils at the same Devonian localities. These fossil soils reveal ancient climate and vegetation that would have selected for this evolutionary transition. Contrary to a popular hypothesis, this transition did not occur in drying desert ponds, but in shallow floodwaters and oxbow lakes of humid woodlands, where stumpy limbs and narrow necks aided negotiation of woody obstacles.
