The Monticello Trail is a crushed gravel and boardwalk trail that winds through the woods. The ascent is gentle and even. Please join us for the Sunday morning hike series, starting at 8:30 a.m. Bring water (there are also water fountains and lavatories at the top, where we stop for 5-10 minutes at the Monticello Visitors' Center.) We hike at a good pace, but it's okay for some folks to trail behind as they choose. We should finish the hike at about 10:00 a.m.
In case of inclement weather, always check your e-mail and/or the Hiking Group's Meetup-page for news of possible cancellations.
We will meet in the Thomas Jefferson Parkway Parking lot that is located directly off Rt. 20 south (not the small lot on Hwy. 53). Coming from Charlottesville, take Rt. 20
south towards Scottsville. Shortly after the exit ramps for Interstate 64, East and West, you will come to a traffic light at College Drive. Continue straight through this traffic light. At the next traffic light (Intersection of Rt. 20 and Rt. 53), make a left turn onto #53. Go only about 100 feet, and then use the entrance to the SMALL Monticello Parking lot on your right. However, do not park there. Instead, use this turn-out to turn your car completely around. Drive back down #53, and then turn right back onto Rt. 20 toward Charlottesville. Then quickly make the very next right hand turn onto Dairy Barn Road. There is a sign there for Thomas Jefferson Parkway Parking, and a sign that says "Private Drive." The LARGE parking lot is located here, and this is where we meet. Call Jerry with questions:[masked]-4751.
It is always a good idea to carry your small valuables with you on the hike; but if you elect to leave valuables in your car, be sure to lock them in your trunk out of sight.
We ask that hikers who reserve a spot and then find they cannot attend should please cancel their attendance online, or get in touch with the Hike Leader.
Our hikers almost never use their cellphones while hiking; but if you are expecting a particularly critical call, please do take it briefly.
