SCIENCE BACKGROUND  OF TOBI STAR ABRAMS

MY FIRST COLLEGE DEGREE IS IN BIOLOGY AND A CHEMISTRY MINOR. I LOVE SCIENCE AND WAS INTERESTED IN ZOOLOGY AND BOTANY AS A YOUNG GIRL . MY FATHER SPARKED MY INTEREST  WITH HIS ELABORATE DISCUSSIONS (usually at the dinner table ) ON BONDING,SALTS, ACIDS AND THE AMAZING PERIODIC TABLE .

MY PARENTS LET ME DISCOVER LIFE IN THE SOIL WATER ETC WITH A MICROSCOPE . I HAD MY OWN LITTLE LAB AS A YOUNGSTER. IN HIGH SCHOOL I STUDIED MORE BIOLOGY /CHEM. WITH HONOR CLASSES ,

I DISCOVER THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IN LINCOLN PARK AND WENT ON MANY OF THEIR FIELD TRIPS  WITH EXCITEMENT  AND WONDER. I WORKED AT THIS INSTITUTION IN EARLY COLLEGE DESIGNING DISPLAYS AND PAINTING LEAVES FOR THE COAL AGE FORREST .

AFTER COLLEGE I WORKED IN VIROLOGY AND BACTERIOLOGY BOTH IN HOSPITAL SETTINGS .
I TRIED TO OBTAIN A JOB IN RESEARCH BUT JOBS WERE NOT OPEN TO WOMEN ESP WITH A BE.SO. DEGREE , I LOVED MICROBIOLOGY AND WANTED TO PURSUE RESEARCH  I GRADUATED IN A NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ETC I STARTED GRAD MEDICAL  MICROBIOLOGY AT THE UNIT OF ILLINOIS BUT I ENTERED WITH AN UNFAIR PROGRAM AND DEFICIENCY IN PHYSICS  SO I DROPPED OUT AFTER GETTING VERY SICK.. MY PARENTS WERE BOTH EDUCATORS SO THEY URGED ME TO GO INTO EDUCATION SO I GOT 3 TEACHING CERTIFICATES ELEMENTARY  EDUCE, BIOLOGY AND ART  I TO 14 ..I TAUGHT RED GRADE FOR 2 YEARS  PLUS I WORKED AS A NATURALIST.

I WAS MARRIED TO A WONDERFUL BRILLIANT ENGINEER  FOR 33 YEARS AND WE SPENT MANY DAYS AT SCIENCE MUSEUMS.WITH OUR 2 SONS   WE ENJOYED TAKING ABOUT GAS LAWS , THE STRUCTURE OF THE ATOM ASTRONOMY AND THE FUTURE OF MANKIND WITH ALWAYS A SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND .

I TOOK AN ADULT EDUCE CLASS AND IT RENEWED  MY LOVE OF ART .I HAVE BEEN TEACHING ART FOR ADULTS AND YOUNGSTERS FOR MANY YEARS .I PRESENT SPECIAL ART PROGRAMS AT SCHOOLS , MUSEUMS AND LIBRARY COMBINING MY BIOLOGY AND ART BACKGROUNDS TEACHING A VARIETY OF WORKSHOPS INCLUDING MY FAVORITE  ANIMAL  AND DINOSAUR DRAWING

I STILL ENJOY GETTING INVOLVED WITH SCIENCE ACTIVITIES  AND RECENTLY ATTENDED A DINOSAUR TRIP IN WY.WHERE WE SPENT MANY HOURS RECOVERING DINOSAUR BONES FROM ROCKS , I ALSO USED MY SCIENTIFIC ART BACKGROUND IN DRAWING VERY ACCURATELY SEVERAL BONES/ DINOSAUR  FOR A PUBLICATION . I ALSO DRAW PEOPLE PETS WITH  PASTELS AS A PART TIME BUSINESS .MY ART WORK REFLECTS MY SCIENCE BACKGROUND  AND IT IS ON SEVERAL WEB SITES.CURRENTLY I HAVE A PAINTING IN A JURIED SHOW IN EVANSTON OPENING OCTOBER FIRST.  .

I AM THRILLED THAT MY YOUNGER SON IS MAJORING IN  BIO CHEMISTRY AT MICHIGAN TECH UNIVERSITY .

Subject: [science-77] How did we get interested in science?

How did we get interested in science?

At our video party, we each talked for a minute about how our scientific curiosity got started. This is what people had to say, as best I caught it ? send me corrections and additions and I will amend the post -- also, if anyone has posted any science reminiscences, let me know and I will link to them. Sorry for lapses in the summary so far:

Avrom (physical chemist, active speaker in the Mayor?s Chicago Science program) ? always liked taking things apart to see how they worked. Occasionally put them back together. Had a great 4th grade teacher. Really enjoyed The Mechanical Universe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mechanical_Universe

Brian (science fundraiser) ? enjoyed a train set and had chemistry set, too.

Bridget (schoolteacher) ? interesting classes.

Clementine ? longstanding interest in science broadly.

Dave ? woke up one day and <I lost it! . . . >

Doreen (pharmaceutical research) -- <didn?t catch>

Ivan ? interested in ornithology from early childhood. Really liked the Cosmos series by Carl Sagan.

Joe ? always thought how science works is cool.

Josh <didn?t catch>

Lauren (aka ?Tycha Brahe?> ? interest from grade school. Taught her 2-year-old sister, who seemed unappreciative.

Liza ? school, reading.

Miguel ? reading <didn't catch>

Robb (software trainer, former librarian) ? two uncles were chemistry majors, Dad was a family M.D., mom a medical secretary. Had a chemistry lab that was a lot of fun among the neighbor kids. Big Thomas Edison fan. Dad helped him set up his lab. See page 65 and on: http://www.explain.com/scenes.pdf

Ronnie (physiologist) ? dad a mechanical engineer. Science seems a basic interest of human beings.

Steve ? both parents were chemists

Tobi (art teacher) -- <didn?t catch>

Trae ? has always been interested in cause and effect. Feels technology makes us human, express our basic nature.
