October Meetup-Special Guest Dan Tapia and GUE diving

This month, we are scheduling out meetup to a different week and day,Tuesday, October 29,to accommodate our presenter.

Dan Tapia is a member of Global Underwater Explorers (GUE), an organization that promotes a style of diving that was originally developed as part of the Woodville Karst Plain Project to map this cave system in Northern Florida.  It is a team based system of diving with a standardized gear configuration and diving techniques designed to minimize risk in very demanding technical situations.  Often referred to as "Do It Right" (DIR), it's promoters see this system as extending beyond the very technical cave diving it was originally developed for into other areas of diving, including recreational diving.  Often controversial, there has been little debate that GUE trained divers are some of the best divers in the world

Dan has been an active member of GUE  since 2009. He will give an overview of how the not-for-profit organization started and what type of projects they are currently participating in. Dan will also give a cursory overview of the education GUE offers along with some show and tell of gear choices for various projects.

Dan is an avid tri-mix technical diver and will be finishing up a GUE cave training class by the time of this presentation. Dan has been trained by some of the world’s most accomplished cave and technical divers and holds certification cards from most of the major training agencies.

Dan has given us a link to a fascinating video of a project by GUE trained divers Here

Dan did a great job presenting a style of diving that is foreign to many of us divers of us and misunderstood by even more of us. He understands his craft and has a very humble method of conveying that knowledge to others. He is not an instructor, though he should be. He is not trying to sell you a course. He is just sharing an new way to enjoy the sport we all love so much. I have had the pleasure of diving with Dan numerous times and it is certainly an eye opening experience. I would suggest taking him up on his offer of a fun dive, I warn you though after and hour or two on the scooter the quarry never seems the same!

Dan did a great presentation- he provided a lot of information on the GUE training and beliefs. It clarified a bad DIR experience I had previously!!
