Is the group pretty open to teaching newcomers the rules of new games and whatnot? This will potentially be my first meetup but I haven't played any of the games mentioned. I can bring a few M:TG decks if anyone is into that.

Always. Teaching newcomers is how we get more people to play with and more people to play with is always more fun. :) We do have a meetup specifically for the purpose of learning new games, Noobaholics Anonymous, but I've seen people learning new games at almost every event we run.

I was thinking of bringing Elder Sign.

I might attend and I could bring Chicago Express - one of my favorite strategy games. My only concern is I don't want to get food or sticky fingers on the game :).

Always a concern. :) But I've had only one minor incident with my games in over a year of organizing at bars and restaurants. Our players are very respectful of the games thankfully.

Any ideas on games? I would love to try a new strategy game. I will bring Settlers just in case.

Go ahead and bring Settlers too for the game pile if you have a chance. Even if you're preoccupied with Smash Up, someone else might want to get a game in of Settlers. :)

Smash Up has been fun! I've picked up some quick deck games I can bring.
