BIRTH, a play by Karen Brody (BOLD Chicago)

What if women knew the truth about childbirth in America?

BIRTH is based on over one hundred interviews Karen Brody conducted with mothers across America who gave birth during 2000-2004. It tells the true stories of 8 women, painting a portrait of how low-risk, educated women are giving birth in America today.

Using a theatre-for-social-change model, BIRTH has sparked a global movement, Birth On Labor Day (BOLD) to make maternity care mother-friendly. BOLD has a 3-part mission of education, truth and action regarding maternity-care issues.  It is also an awareness-raising and fundraising opportunity, supporting mother-initiated dialogue and solutions to maternity care.

BIRTH will take place September 7th – 9th at Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble St., in Chicago.  Following the play, there will be a Talkback Panel, comprised of local birth/health professionals, fielding questions and comments from the audience about the issues the play addresses, and facilitating a dialogue with the audience on how we can make maternity care more mother-friendly in Illinois.

In 2006, the play was produced more than 40 times in over 20 locations over Labor Day weekend. During the month of September 2007, there will be over 100 benefit performances of BIRTH in cities and communities around the world.  The Chicago proceeds will go to the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) of Chicago.

To purchase tickets, go to or call[masked] (M-F, 9-5).

Ticket prices are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
