One of the world’s most accomplished string quartets joins forces with a leading young ensemble for this unusual concert of pieces written for eight string players by Mendelssohn, Welcher, and Shostakovich. The Shanghai Quartet celebrates its thirtieth season and twentieth year on the Meyer Concert Series. The Miró Quartet recently won the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award and was the first ensemble to receive a coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant. In addition to serving as Quartet-in-Residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the group was chosen for the Distinctive Debut Series of Carnegie Hall and featured in the PBS “American Masters” documentary on violinist Isaac Stern. The complete program features Shostakovich’s Two Pieces for String Octet, op. 11; Dan Welcher’s Museon Polemus (East Coast premiere); and Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major, op. 20. Come early for a pre-concert gallery tour of Chinese Narrative Painting, at 6:45 pm!
