Time: 4:00pm - 5:30pm, Wendesday, August 21th, 2013

Venue: 97 E Brokaw Road, Suite 210, San Jose

The speaker will provide a brief introduction of legal matters relating to intellectual property (“IP”, e.g., patent) protection for startup companies. The seminar will be practical and interactive, providing tips on whether to seek IP protection, when and how to do it, and how much it may cost. Please bring your questions and prepare to engage in an informative discussion with the speaker and other attendees.

The enclosed article, recently published in the journal “The Computer & Internet Lawyer,” provides background information for the seminar.

About the speaker:

Alex Nie (聂焰) is a patent attorney with the law firm Foley & Lardner LLP, at Palo Alto. Alex has dual technical background, with a M.S. degree in computer science and a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, prior to attending law school. Alex started his legal career 5 years ago.

Alex’s practice focuses on patent prosecution, licensing and counseling for high-tech companies, in particular startup and medium-sized companies in IT and life sciences. In particular, Alex has experience in counseling startups on securing and monetizing their intellectual property rights, and align such rights with the company's business and funding strategy.

Alex is active in community service. In addition to providing free legal consultation to local indigent residents, he is also the current president of the local Chinese lawyers’ association (CALOBA) and is helping organize the 2013 HYSTA annual conference.
