In addition to being a masterpiece of world literature, the novel’s influence on Japan has been immense; one authority remarked, “Anywhere you cut Japanese culture, you hit The Tale of Genji.”
The novel tells the story of Genji, an idealized courtier, whose beauty, grace, aesthetic taste, emotional sensitivity, and cultural accomplishments win the admiration (or jealousy) of everyone he meets.
