Le Havre / Cinematheque / Mad Greek

DESCRIPTION

In this warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) into the path of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoeshiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight.

REVIEWS

"Three and-a-half stars! Its view is that of a child who hasn't yet been broken to accept a world of limited possibilities, which is another way of saying that its view is revolutionary."
- Phil Coldiron, Slant Magazine

"Buster Keaton isn't dead, he's alive and well in Finland ... If the name Aki Kaurismäki doesn't mean anything to you, it should, and
Le Havremay be the film to make it happen."
- Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times

"Grade: A! A perfect, deadpan, impishly optimistic fairy tale."
- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"A stylized and sentimental fairy tale about the way the world might be ... Aki Kaurismäki has become a major inheritor of the comic-humanist tradition of Charlie Chaplin, Jean Renoir and Jacques Tati."
- A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"Four stars! There is nothing cynical or cheap about it, it tells a good story with clear eyes and a level gaze, and it just plain makes you feel good."
- Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times

"A gem! I left the theater thinking yes, there is a God who occasionally performs miracles."
- Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch, The Westchester Guardian

NOTE TO FIRST TIME GOERS
If this is your first movie with the group, there is no fee to attend.

This group has been successful partly because members have a genuine interest in meeting fellow independent movie goers. We don't always know where to look for you, especially first timers.  Consider printing out the pictures of the attendees to help you find them easier.

We have multiple meeting places:

  • Entrance door to the movie in the theater hallway 5-10 minutes before the movie starts
  • By the entrance door or ticket office after the movie
  • Reserved table at the restaurant under the name "Movie Group"

We don't always sit together in the movie theater but if you see a bunch of people talking about good movies they have seen, it is probably us. Please join in. We are always happy to get new people involved.

NOTE TO ALL
In the world of Independent films, it is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed.

Not a standalone movie; knowledge of French films and politics necessary in order not to fall asleep.
