A Separation: Panera Bread Co./Lakeland Community College

Every year at this time, Lakeland Community College has an International Film Festival, featuring some very good films from around the world. These screenings are free and open to the public.

This year's theme is "Ancient Ties, Modern Conflict: Tradition, Transformation, and the Human Spirit." The three films, showing on consecutive Fridays, look like excellent choices!

There will be a 10-minute informative explanation before the movie starts. Following each film there is a brief question and answer session.

For more information, call[masked]-7508.

How to find the auditorium: After parking in the lot on the left of the main building (where you will see other cars), go in the entrance closest to Rt. 306. Take the elevator up one floor and turn right; you will soon see the auditorium (Room H-101)

6-7:15 EATS Meet at Panera Bread Co. (7357 Mentor Ave. 44060) if you need a bite to eat before the movie.

7:30 MOVIE

123 minutes

Film region: Iran

Guest Speaker – Prof. Sevin Gallo

Set in contemporary Iran, A Separation is a compelling drama about the dissolution of a marriage. Simin wants to leave Iran with her husband Nader and daughter Termeh. Simin sues for divorce when Nader refuses to leave behind his Alzheimer-suffering father.

The CIMG viewed this excellent film a year ago, and it was enthusiastically enjoyed by everyone. Even Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 99% Fresh rating! Such a film needs to be seen by everyone; it is so multi-layered that I have decided it is definitely worth a second viewing ; )

DISCUSSION: This is a 2-hour movie. Adding the pre-film explanation + the post-film Q&A session will have us leaving the school at around 10:00. I would like to wait and see how the group feels about stopping somewhere else on our own at that time...

A Separation infuses a great insight into modern Iran with a powerful insight into the human condition - this demonstrates the power and poetic potential of cinematic drama. It's a MUST see. ~Blake Howard

I forgot that this film also won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay beating out all other Hollywood films. BTW, the "lecturer" was not truthful about this being an Iranian film only. From wikipedia:

"The film premiered on 9 February 2011 at the 29th Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran.[10] Six days later it played in Competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival."

Since it premiered at the Berlin festival 6 days later after its release, how can you say it was only meant for Iranian audiences?
