Richard Dawkins & Lawrence Krauss: "The Unbelievers" at OSU

Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss will be making their only Ohio tour appearance in Columbus at Mershon Auditorium at OSU. They are touring in promotion of their new documentary The Unbelievers. From the RDFRS website:

"The Unbelievers follows renowned scientists Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss across the globe as they speak publicly about the importance of science and reason in the modern world - encouraging others to cast off antiquated religious and politically motivated approaches toward important current issues."

General admission tickets are $30, student price is $15. Here is the link to purchase tix:

A few of us are planning to stay over in Columbus on Monday night. There is a Red Roof Inn about 1.5 miles from Mershon Auditorium w/decent reviews and reasonable price:

Thanks to the efforts of T.C. we nearly landed a Cleveland-area appearance- the issue was availability of a suitable venue. Oh well, road trip!

See you there! :)

I would have loved to see them. I saw Lawrence Krauss speak a half dozen times when he was at Case. I am a long-time fan.
Does anyone know when or how the documentary can be viewed?

I read a little but about human suffering in religious literature. To me, the highlight of the event was, to hear the definition of suffering (not just human suffering) within the context of evolution! Has anyone other other than Dawkins, ever defined suffering this way? Also, I think its important to look at what Dawkins and Krauss said within the proper framework.

I thought the documentary itself was enjoyable, but nothing Earth-shattering. However- for someone who is new to the world of non-theism, the movie would be just the thing to check out. I loved the Dawkins/Krauss Q & A/chat afterwards. Good questions were asked, made them both ponder :) One immediately deferred to the other on a few. Getting together before the event, after the event and for breakfast on Tuesday morn were all very fun. It was a pleasure to meet and hang out with Kathryn, Allison, Rich, Barry, Jim, Aaron and others!

Enjoyed the film! I especially enjoyed the Question & Answer/Discussion after the film with the film makers and Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krause! It was well worth the trip!

Red Roofers who are arriving early enough- let's plan to meet at El Jalepeno Mexican Restaurant around 3:30-4pm for a late lunch/early dinner or a drink. It's located adjacent to the hotel.

We're running a bit late - we'll be at El Jalapeno around 4:15pm.

I found several campus bars...My guess is that they are very "college" and hopefully not dives... Kildare's Irish Pub & Ugly Tuna Salloona - south Campus gateway, THE LITTLE BAR Just north of Lane Avenue on High Street. Most bars, about 15, are lined up from 1500 to 2500 North High street. Across from the Wexner is Chumley's. Bernie's and Larry's at about 1900. http://www.collegebarscene.com/bar/Larrys/1366 If we want less of a college atmosphere, I suggest Short North Area, a hot spot for the city, about 1.5 miles away. I only know Betty's Maybe someone can ask a local to recommend a good spot for conversation.

I will be on campus most of the day visiting old friends from my OSU years. Even though I havent met any of you yet, I'm guessing it wont be too hard to find the group at the Mexican restaurant by the RRI. I can drive a few people to the auditorium and recommend some of my old haunts for drinks after the event.

Mark, if you email me I will send you my cell number.

One bit of negative news- the Red Roof Inn, surprisingly, does NOT offer any shuttle service. As Kathryn indicated below, we can arrange carpooling etc.

Is the group getting together after the event??

    April 4, 2014

    • Mark T.

Allison, I'm sure we will but haven't researched places right near the auditorium yet. I'm planning to ask a friend from Columbus about that this weekend.

Had to cancel. The gent I met bought my ticket & is taking a friend. I just didn't want to be a miserable attendee with my back.

Oh wow! It would really really be great to be able to see those two together in person. But it's too inconvenient for me to make a two hour ride there and back late at night on a work night. Take lots of pictures. Maybe someone can record it for YouTube.

For those staying at Red Roof Inn who'd rather not starve to death during the Dawkins/Krauss event: there is El Jalepeno Mexican Grill adjacent to the hotel (yum) and also Cafe Kabul (Middle Eastern fare). And Applebees very close by.

I'm new and have not met any of you...I booked a room at the RR Inn. I'm not sure if I'll be in an energetic mood to walk to and from the event, but if I recognize any of you at the Inn, I'll invite you to car pull to save on parking. http://www.campusparc.com/ or Ohio Union south or North. (?) http://en.parkopedia.com/parking/building/mershon-auditorium-franklin-oh/ Also, is anyone planning on meeting somewhere afterwards?

    March 19, 2014

    • Mark T.

Looking forward to meeting you, Kathryn! I'm guessing there will be a hotel shuttle that can drop us off/pick us up near the venue, I'll call RR Inn ahead of time to find out. And I would say it's fairly certain that some of us will be going out afterwards!

Just got 2 tics. Going & returning same dayish. Does anyone know if we have to pay to park ?

    March 17, 2014

  • Dave H.

Anyone interested in a rider who would help pay for gas? I'd also be interested in sharing a room for the night while down there; that way we don't have to hurry out the second the talk is done, we can go out somewhere afterwards, etc.
