CFINO Presents: An Afternoon with Mandisa Thomas

  • Center for Inquiry Northeast Ohio is proud to present an afternoon with the founder and President of Black Nonbelievers, Inc. - Mandisa Thomas!

Mandisa and her organization (founded in 2011) have been working to encourage more Black Americans to come out and stand up strong in their non-theism, in the face of adversity due to strong religious undertones. According to Mandisa, "The more we make our presence known, the better our chances of working together to turn around some of the disparities we face. We are NOT alone."

While never formally indoctrinated into a faith, Mandisa was exposed to plenty of religion in her formative years. She enjoyed reading about the gods of different cultures, but her skepticism about deities set in rather quickly. Mandisa recalls, "I couldn’t help but wonder what made this God (of the Bible) so special that he warrants such prevalence in today’s society.”

In addition to serving as the President of Black Nonbelievers Inc., Mandisa serves on the board of both the Secular Coalition for America and the Foundation Beyond Belief. She has been featured in the media a number of times, including appearances on CBS Sunday Morning,, and JET Magazine. In addition to being featured in a CNN article from 2011, Mandisa authored an excellent article for CNN titled "Confessions of a Black Atheist" in 2015.

The event begins at 2pm. Refreshments will be served before Mandisa's talk.

    See you there! :)
