"So how do we motivate people to learn? Can we?  Should we?"

Darn good questions... on a small scale, we as individuals & as a group can promote open-mindedness in those around us by simply being unafraid to speak our minds when necessary- it's a start.

Of course, getting involved & persuading others to become involved is good too.

I would love to see the Cleveland Freethinkers become an organization with some influence one day- promoting rational inquiry, the loosening of dogmas, general open-mindedness, and the search for real truth.

(sigh), unfortunately you are right Eric.  But the question is why?  Do most people just not care?  Are people in power keeping the masses unintelligent on purpose?

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but there are many people who stand to gain from exploiting uneducated masses. I would be surprised if some of them have not been more than happy to watch American education falter.  I think the bigger reason though is just plain lack of interest and motivation.  Chalk that up to poor parenting.  Too many people just seem content to remain ignorant.  Ignorance is bliss right?  It might be easier, but looking at the state of the American lower class, I'd hardly call it bliss.  So how do we motivate people to learn? Can we?  Should we?

Yeah...   I had an interest in Ron Paul for a minute there a little while back, but the second I heard he denied Evolution, I lumped him in with all the other loons and crackpots.

Why can't we ever have a damned candidate that will do what is good for LOGICAL, INTELLIGENT Americans?  Is that too much to ask?   Bah!

Ron Paul was not one of the 3 who raised their hands... however: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPoCsC8VT9g
Why didn't he raise his hand at the debate? Since he's a Republican, I figure Dr.Paul still feels he must "wipe the butt" of the religious right.

Stuff on Democrats is harder to find... here's Barack Obama's view of faith (and lack of faith) in America: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35sGJrWKcmY

More to come, if I can find it.
