And when the scope went up, it didn't work!  The mirror had been ground incorrectly.  Required a mission by the Orbiter Discovery and an array of optics corrections that fixed it! 
 
btw, spinoffs from this correction mission include improvements in semi-conductor technology and micro-endoscopes that refine medical diagnosis.
