Re: [humanism-174] "True Religion"?

Wait a minute.  Atheism is NOT an official practiced religion and therefore is NOT protected under the establishment clause.  However, MY right to worship or NOT TO worship IS protected by the establishment clause. Moreover, my right to express my opinion IS protected by the "Freedom of Speech" clause.

Be careful what you wish for, Tim.  If atheism isn't a religion, then it isn't protected by the First Amendment.  The way these fundies twist everything, there's just no sense in helping them.

Chris,

So, religion is not limited to the supernatural, according to you.  I say that religion by definition must have a supernatural component.  http://oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/religion  This is why I do not accept the claim that atheism is a religion.  Of course, I am open to being persuaded that I am wrong about this.

To call atheism or stalinism or any ism that does not include a supernatural component a religion is (imo) to stretch the definition of religion a tad too far!  I personally do not consider atheism to be a religion. I do resist efforts to invent atheist churches etc.

Besides, good rule of thumb: no funny hats, it's not a religion! lol
