Re: [humanism-174] GOP Leaders Court Religious Conservatives At Conference

The more moderate GOP candidates and incumbents (I may be going out on a limb by presuming that there are such critters!) are trapped by their own greed and ambition.  Our political system was built--not on the instructions of the Christian god--but on a matrix of compromise, cigar smoke, and a veneer of congeniality.  The New Deal exists because FDR was able to massage cooperation out of Southern conservative Dems. LBJ used his own personal political will and the capitol gained from a nation shocked by JFK's assassination in order to pass even more far-reaching social programs.

But the current political base of the GOP will have nothing to do with compromise or cooperation if these necessary elements cost them even an inch of their ideological agenda.  This means a virtually crippled government and likely a doomed GOP.  Next Congressional elections will help to determine if Americans in general want a path toward equality and opportunity and Rule by Law, or a path toward re-criminalization of personal sin, social equality, and re-institutionalizing the hanging of non-Christian heretics!

Remember that only 150 or so years ago, a vicious Civil War was fought, in which hundreds of thousands of Americans killed each other over the right of Southern Bible-believing Christian landowners to own people of color.

Every year, they become less relevant. Some Dems have been running on social issues and winning. I guess that in the past, they were hesitant to do so.

So we shall see how this plays out. I don't think the younger generation, who will now be voting, has much tolerance for their insanity.

They need to court them so they don't bolt if/when the GOP
takes the more moderate stances it will need to take in
order to win national elections. Whether it's possible to
court that well is open to debate.
