Re: [humanism-174] rebuttal to loon letter in Plain Dealer on Saturday

Since they printed what amounts to libel, an unsubstantiated allegation of fraud, I would hope that they would print it.  This is presuming that nobody with stature from the museum responds.

And yes, a moron.  Or as I would put it, a pussy-ass coward and a fucking liar!

Will they even print it?

I can't honestly believe they printed his letter.  What a load of trash.  The pelvis alone is comPLETEly different from that of a chimpanzee.

Moron.

Plain Dealer Letter to the Editor

I was always under the impression that dishonesty is wrong.  I have also thought that making false accusations was dishonest, especially when making accusations of fraud about people whose work you know nothing about.  Bill Haney of Brunswick had a letter published in Saturday’s PD that essentially accused the staff of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and by extension hundreds of other researchers, of attempting to pass off a chimpanzee skeleton as an early hominid.

The clue here is in Haney’s use of the term “Darwinists”.  The only folks who use such an outdated and prejudicial term are the anti-evolution fundamentalists.  Theirs is a bizarre cult loosely based on Christianity.  The adherents of this cult are required to be ignorant of science and encouraged to lie whenever scientific facts get into the way of their odd religious beliefs.  They are like Flat Earthers or Bigfoot Believers, only with less integrity.

The accusation is of course ludicrous.  Over the past forty years thousands of men and women across the globe have examined the original unreconstructed fossils as well as the reconstructed casts of “Lucy”, the 3.2 million year old example of the early hominid Australopithecus afarensis now residing at the CMNH.  There are hundreds of chimp skeletons easily available for examination and comparison and such an effort to fool the world would be impossible to get away with.  A summer intern at the Metroparks Zoo would spot the attempt in seconds!  Scientists and experts in zoology, paleontology, anatomy, and biology fail to see through this “fraud”, but Bill Haney and his fellow cultists, uneducated in science and ignorant of the processes and people behind the discovery and analysis of Lucy, apparently can see what the experts cannot!  It shows the length to which anti-evolution cultists will go in order to destroy modern science, especially that which deals with biological and cosmological evolution.

Obviously Haney and his ilk have not examined Lucy, nor have they spoken with any of the men and women who have actually worked on this remarkable animal.  Nor have they looked at the original specimen compared to the anatomy of a chimp.  The difference is too dramatic to fake and no matter how clever those pesky museum folks might be in modifying a morphology, the original is still available for examination.  The cultists’ ignorance of these facts does not stop them however from making dishonest and unsubstantiated accusations.

By the way, Mr. Haney, the footprints discovered in 1978 ARE mentioned at the museum.  They are also shown at the museum.  They are HUMAN-LIKE:  smaller than those of a modern human, but more importantly, the big toe shows that it is TRANSITIONING from the perpendicular—as in apes—to the forward position as in modern humans.  The animal who made the prints was representative of a transitional species--or one of our cousins, but neither ape nor modern human.

Also, “Darwinists” do not use the term “missing link” either.   You should have paid more attention in school!
