I had an idea yesterday while in a mall hearing xmas carols. I wondered why we don't have our own version of solstice songs, and thought it might be fun to have a song contest!

To bring out the poet in all of us, we could re-write the seasonal songs we all grew up with,

giving them a twist of reason.

After all, it is the season!

Door to door caroling is optional. ; )

Dashing through the cant
In a very reasoned way
Refuting all the rant
With every word we say
All the myths we shred
And open up your mind
With scientific thoughts instead
Of bunk the foolish find

Infidels, infidels, infidels are we
We don't believe in magic
Or fairies on a tree
Infidels, infidels, infidels are we
We don't believe that Jesus
Has come for you or me
Infidels, infidels, infidels are we
There is only one life
So join us and be free!

There is no hell, whatev'r they say
Though it's certain poor fools will continue to pray
The priests still beguile them and treat them like sheep
With fear and false hopes in slavery keep
No hell, no hell, no heaven too
Nothing to fool or to terrify you!

Come on people! You don't expect me to do them all, do you?

We need to get the Cleveland Freethinkers Choir together to make a YouTube video....

Silent night! Healthy repose!
No more bells, no more calls,
No loudspeakers to wail in your ear,
No more guilt and no more fear.
Sleep in heathenly peace, sleep in heathenly peace.

O God, our strife in ages past,
Our wars for years to come,
The reason for the stormy blast,
And our infernal crime.

We must shake off this foolish faith,
Of guilt and baseless fear,
In trust and reason we are safe,
And hold this one life dear.

Religion has torn us apart,
In bloody pain and strife,
We must renounce this devious art,
And lay down gun and knife.

No God we need to do good deeds,
No faith to love each one,
No cross or veil to show our creeds,
Our hate and fear undone.

O come all ye faithless, atheists and sceptics,
O come ye, o come ye, do not be afraid!
Come face the death threats; they will never scare us.
O come speak out for freedom,
O come speak out for reason,
O come speak out for science,
Dogma shall fail!

OK, this is drifting away from carols, but let's add it to the collection anyway...

All things bright and beautiful,
All beings great and small,
All things weird or wonderful:
Don’t need a god at all.

Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
Evolved their glowing colours,
Evolved their tiny wings.

The insects and the microbes,
Are worlds we can explore,
And yet faith makes us hate life,
And dream of something more.

The evil of division,
The cruelty of hate,
Sustained both by religion,
And heaven that must wait.

The cold wind in the winter,
The summer sun desired,
Obey the laws of physics,
No miracles required.

The oceans and the coral,
The dolphins at their play,
The vastness of the cosmos,
The code of DNA.

We all have eyes to see this,
And lips we should announce,
That man-god myths are bunkum,
High time we should renounce.
