Cleveland Freethinkers Mission Statement

A link to the following is now included in the "welcome email" that is automatically sent to each new member who joins the Cleveland Freethinkers group. It applies to existing members as well, effective 3/16/2012.

We want to cultivate an environment where people are free to express themselves and debate matters such as religion, politics, philosophy, and activism without repercussion. We welcome anyone willing to engage in genuine conversation, listen and learn from others, and have a good time. This is meant to be a place where freethinking people from Northern Ohio and beyond can come to respectfully debate issues, freely express their ideas, make friends, and participate in fun, entertaining and educational events, and to take part in activism as well.

In our efforts to produce an environment consistent with our expressed mission statement, we ask that our members abide by the following guidelines:

First: When debating ideas online or in person, please remain respectful and courteous, avoid personal insults, and respect the request of anyone who expresses a desire to allow their participation in a debate or conversation to end. If asked not to contact a member further, please respect that person's request. If you are uncomfortable with a particular series of exchanges, even if you are not involved in them, feel free to contact any member of our leadership team; we do not wish for any member of our group to feel uninvited from, or uncomfortable with, participating in our discussions.

Second: We ask members to reflect on whether events in their past might impact the well-being of other members and/or their families. If so, please notify a member of the leadership team as soon as possible, and a decision will be made on that member’s continued involvement in the online community and/or participation in in-person meetups.

Last: If any member learns of another member’s history, or has witnessed or been told of recent or past questionable behavior by someone, and feels uncomfortable, threatened or fearful for any reason, we offer an open door "Sunshine" policy to shed light on the issue. Please speak to one of the leadership team members. Do not wait until something escalates. We want everyone to have fun and feel safe in this group.
