NoSQL @ Netflix : Part 1

Come listen to Siddharth Anand, software architect at Netflix, talk about the white paper he published and in which he describes:

  • What Netflix expects from an RDBMS
  • What Netflix can live without and hence move to NoSQL
  • What Netflix cannot move to NoSQL
  • Best practices when using SimpleDB and our budding work in Cassandra
  • Some thoughts on Bi-directional Data Replication -- a pipeline Sid built at Netflix

Sid had a in depth presentation and good humor all throughout. Thanks to Sid, Sebastian and others.

On the technical side ... I am hopeful that more NoSQL infrastructure software will come out so that applications do not have to take all that burdens (group by, join etc). For example,

    http://www.globule.org/publi/CJQCDS_ircs68.html

NoSQL Cloud data stores provide scalability and high availability properties for web applications, but do not support complex queries such as joins ...

The trip to be at this event what worth the time and effort. If you get a chance to read the slides or see the video you will see that I mean.

    Looking forward to future sessions:

    - Sid, I think many people may be interested on best practices for developing consistency checkers (that you spent all December writing :) ). Solving the consistency problem is a important engineering challenge.

The Netflix talk its self was quite good, but it was preceded byt a series of non-technical sales pitches and an oddly placed 'intro to cassandra'. If you are going to put sales pitches with the talks please match your pitch to the audience.

Even before the audio or video recordings are ready, you can get a lot of the technical content from the white paper behind the slides:

Thanks FB, Sebastian, Sri Satish, Sid and every one.

Sid, Your presentation was Awesome and simply Super. This is my first session on NoSQL and i simply loved it. You really made it super easy to understand for a novice like me.Thanks for sharing all your experiences you encountered while moving to the CLOUD and noSQL.

I will look forward for the next talks. Awesome Presentation and Great Topic.

Thanks to Sebastian and Facebook for arranging the talk in a short moment. Sid and Satish did excellent. I have seen my friend's Netflix streaming buffered time to time. He has wireless adapter on back of his TV which sits in first floor. Router is in second floor. I do agree that there are lots of client issues that Netfix cannot control, they can only do best job possible with latest technologies. Taming SimpleDB for persistent Webscale is heroic effort.

Sebastian, will the stream link be posted here? Can we set up the stream a little earlier? I'll be there at 6 pm.

Also, for others, I've beefed up my talk with more on Cassandra.

    February 17, 2011

I'm not sure I can disclose specific numbers, but that's the right neighborhood.

    Hi Michael,
This talk will be a more depth dive on that paper and a lead-in to part 2, which will be about Cassandra. If you have read the white paper, it might be better to stream from home. This talk is about 80% what I presented at QCon SF 2010.

Unfortunately, there is a competing NoSQL meetup at the same date and time. http://www.meetup.com/SF-Bay-Area-Large-Scale-Production-Engineering/events/15480975/

Has anyone heard Siddharth Anand talk before? I read and enjoyed the paper. If this is just going to be a rehash of something I already read and understand, I'll give up my seat.

I would LOVE to go, thank you for setting this up. But I just started a Tue/Thur class that is important to my day job. And I'm the prototype student for this class,so I can't miss any days. I'll go to the next one.
