Silicon Valley Amazon Web Services (February Meetup)

  • Feb 11, 2008 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Brian Matsubara and Thomas Jones, both from
rPath, will be our first speakers in February's meetup. They will demo how easy it is to build Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) to create software appliances for EC2. Following that, Sebastian Stadil (AWS developer) will detail Amazon's latest and greatest Web Service, SimpleDB. He will expose its architecture, advantages, and drawbacks, and talk about existing alternatives. It is equally a good occasion to meet fellow developers and share experiences. About Silicon Valley AWS Meetup (AWSome.ws) Amazon's Web Services have changed the way startups are done. EC2 provides the ability to scale out at marginal cost, S3 provides unlimited redundant storage, FPS an easy payment system, and now SimpleDB, an infinitely scalable database. Come discuss how these Web services flatten the competitive landscape, and allow you and I to compete with the big boys. We have a blog up at
awsome.ws.

The rPath explanation was good. The AWS evangelist was difficult to understand and didn't bring much new to us, merely hyped his product. Maybe that's what evangelists have to do.

I am sure the Amazon speaker was burned out of his earlier engagements, but is presentation was a bit un-organized... though I was really interested in his load-balancing demo.

The audience asked too many questions - moderation would be nice to avoid going over.

Awesome - got some idea about AWS - before this meeting I was a novice. Thank you for organizing this meetup!

I may be able to share my project by then. We have 10 servers in the farm on EC2. This is an R&D project at AdBrite.com.
Yes, we are also looking for talent to hire.
Come have fun with our EC2 Project.

I'll demo Animoto.com and describe how we utilize AWS for our entire tech infrastructure (and we're currently hiring!).
