North Sheep Mtn Walkaround

A loop hike around North Sheep Mtn. starting from Coulson Gulch trailhead in Johnny Park, hike down Coulson Gulch trail to North St. Vrain Creek, hike west along the North St. Vrain Creek for about a mile and a half, then a strenous climb (~1400 ft. with some steep sections) north up a side canyon back to the Johnny Park jeep road at the top of the canyon rim which we'll follow back to the trailhead.

Neat views of the canyons walls along North St. Vrain Creek. The creek should have a pretty good flow. Two bridge crossings of the creek. There should be a nice variety of flowers (and maybe butterflies) on display along the route.

Bring at least two liters of water, snacks/lunch to enjoy somewhere along the creek.  Current forecast is for mostly sunny skies, temperatures in the high 70's. and breezy conditions. Here's a link to the weather forecast for the hike area.

Trekking poles, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also recommended.

Starting elevation: ~7650 ft.

Max Elevation: ~8400 ft.

Min Elevation: 6800 ft.

Total climb: ~2000 ft.

R/T distance: ~9.2 miles

Mid-Intermediate level hike at moderate pace (about 2 mph including rest stops), all on trail. Hike should take around 5 hours plus about a 45 minute drive to and from the trailhead.  For experienced and in-shape hikers.

Please read the hike description carefully and don't sign up for the hike unless you are confident you can complete the described hike (pace, expected conditions, RT distance, total climb, and max elevation).

Dogs: No.

Please be prompt so others are not kept waiting. Five minute wait for no-shows.

We do regrouping stops at all trail intersections.

Please, don't show up for a hike unless your YES RSVP has been accepted for you and any guest(s) that you intend to bring with you.

Please cancel if you decide not to attend so spaces will be available for others.

Hiking is risky. Every year people are hurt and killed because they go beyond their abilities, get lost, or bring the wrong gear. I normally lead hikes that I've done before. I don't do technical climbs but some of my hikes have strenuous climbs that may require using some handholds and require good physical strength and agility. I am not a professional guide. You are responsible for yourself. By signing up for this hike you acknowledge that you are solely responsible for your own safety and will do the necessary research to understand the conditions of this hike and the gear and conditioning you require.
And lastly, anyone choosing to hike with our group should carry personal medical insurance and a CORSAR (Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue) card in case of an emergency.
