Bonjour,

The Julia Child Dinner is full.  Thank you to everyone who has responded and paid.

Let Luci know what you are planning to bring.  You can put it on this site.  Then she and I can fill in the menu.  Julia Child cookbooks are at the library and, I am certain you an find anything you want online.

Hi! I'm on my second attempt at clafoutis....hoping this one works! :). I've made it before, it just seems to be one of those days :( Anyway, just wondering what the rules are...it's my first meetup....can I still come if I ruin this as one as well? I hate to arrive empty handed, but just checked the oven, and, well....not too sure what's going on in there. Should I stop by a market and get some cheese perhaps? Ugggghhh!

Hi Margo! Per our emails back and forth directly last week re conflict with public performance same day as Julia Child Dinner -- I still would dearly love to show up there to enjoy the evening with all of you after the piano recital! I'll be able to contribute to the cooking efforts next time, but this time I'm wondering if it might be okay for me to simply bring along two bottles of French wine (perhaps a Beaujolais), a loaf of fresh French Bread, and a box of BUTTER! (This might go toward replenishing your own supply of butter after cooking up all that food! Goodness knows Julia Child was all about the BUTTER!) Also, I would happily bring along a $10 cash donation, since it's too late to handle my fee the other way, now that I've had to postpone my decision about this. Please let me know if this will work. It appears that I'm already on the RSVP list, and I still have the address.

Hoping to meet all of you this Saturday!

    Lynn K.

Help I have a question about butter for my Amuse-Gueule Au Roquefort (Roquefort Cheese Balls). The recipe for my Julia Child appetizer says to add butter to the cheese. Julia Child, writes in Mastering the Art of French Cooking, “Except for cake frostings and certain desserts for which we have specified unsalted butter, American salted butter and French butter are interchangeable in cooking.” That means I can use salted butter 3Tbs per each 4 ounces of cheese. What do people think of salted versus unsalted butter for this appetizer?

    January 16, 2013

    • Luci O.

i think u should use unsalted butter. That is just my opinion, because the cheese has a lot of salt already.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking so I was surprised re Julia's comment to use salted butter for everything except for certain desserts.

Maybe we can do this event for Valentine Day. The dish has to be red as spicy red.

I picked up 3 DVD's from the public library yesterday. They are titled " The French Chef" with Julia Child Vol 1, 2, & 3. I also picked up the book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking"
I would like to try cooking up a mushroom soup or maybe a potato leek soup. However this is all new to me.

Hi Margo, Just to let you know that the details of the meetup should be on the above after your address. Right now, it says no details yet.
By updating this, any new comer can see the meetup description without reading the comments.

  • Luci O.

What do all of u think of this menu

    •Appetizer
•Soup (a light vegetable soup would be lovely and easy to make)
•Main Course (Beef Bourguignon & Coq au Vin)
•Salad (Bib lettuce with French vinaigrette is lovely and light and could be served after the soup - the other salad could be more substantial and could be served after the main course.
•dessert - we must have at least two! (perhaps tarte tatin, lemon tarte or chocolate - all of which are in season at the moment. Depends on the ambition of the cooks in this category)
•cheese - very French here to end the meal and to finish our wine, but if the majority don't want to end with cheese, we could always finish with cheesecake

If you guys ever decide to do ifa vegetarian meal of Julia's dishes, count me in! I'm not sure I can participate in a full menu otherwise however. (So frustrating sometimes, because I couldn't eat a thing she cooked, but I did love watching her!!)

    December 8, 2012

If its ok with all of you, I can create a menu of her winter dishes then submit it for approval. We can start from there and then anybody can come up with their Julia's favorite dish. Let me know, if you want me to do this.

Let's ask..Electric-Rick, Do you have a place chosen? Is Margo's offer something you'd entertain? Near El Cajon Blvd. and College Ave. (El Cerrito)
Margo how many people can you have over? Is it a house, and what's parking like?
I have a large club house with tables, chairs, U shape kitchen, with stove oven, microwave, frig and counters, and rest rooms. Even a pool & Jacuzzi, big screen TV & VCR. Reservations are $35. We'd have to finish no later than 9 to 10 at night. Holds a lot no problem for at least 50 people. I'd consider, depending on the consensus. I'd have to print you up parking passes and email them to you, or pass them out upon arrival. Would also need a commitment for volunteers to clean kitchen and eating areas and take out trash, so we left it as we find it.
Location, Up in Escondido, just off I-15 and El Norte.
    Next...

Margo Castagna, Nice of you to offer to host event in your home. What region of the county are you in? My attendance would depend on the date and the location of the dinner.
