How about a movie?

Serves me right for cutting and pasting, I didnt put in the movie name- Volga-Volga, and the Cinematheque is usually $8 This is actually an event for the Russian Language and Culture group but Im thinking a Russian movie, and a Soviet one to boot, might be of interest to some folks in our group. USSR, 1938, Grigori Alexandrov “The best of all Soviet comedies, very populist in character, very typical of its country—and very funny.” So wrote Adam Garbicz and Jacek Klinowski about this beloved and tuneful Russian musical, in which two rival factions from a balalaika factory travel by boat to compete in the Moscow Musical Olympiad. The film stars Lyubov Orlova, wife of director Alexandrov and the Soviet screen’s foremost musical-comedy star. A surprise hit when shown at the Canton Film Society in February 1981, it was brought back by popular demand four months later. It was also reputedly Stalin’s favorite film; he presented a print of it to Franklin Roosevelt in 1942. So anyone game?

Wow, Stalin Era Screwball Comedies that double as musicals in Russian are sort of absurdist.
