RE: [css-56] Keep our meetup going

I’m glad Erica explained the original intent and how it evolved.  One of the other members in the list mentioned the Photoshop group and how they use webinars. I have attended those too and believe this would be the best method of organizing this group.  I personally find it hard to leave my office and attend Meetup’s. My time is better managed and productive staying here.  However, I would like some human contact once in a while!

Alex mentioned we should combine this group to cover various subjects…

You, guys should open a new group, that deals with html, css,

web design, search optomization, cms, and more.. we need to

make this group more market relevant.

All of those subjects have been covered somewhere in Meetups or Facebook groups…

Here’s a Social Media group… https://www.facebook.com/HoustonSocialMedia

A Non-profit Meetup… http://www.meetup.com/net2houston/

A Web Technology group… http://www.meetup.com/webtechnologydesign/

A Houston Enterpreneurs & Small Business marketing group.. http://www.meetup.com/houstonentrepreneurs/

A Web 2.5 Marketing – Twitter, FB, Linkedin & More  (Houston-Tweetup) group… http://www.meetup.com/houston-tweetup/

(This was changed to include Facebook and Linkedin and others, it was originally a Twitter group)

A Web Design and Usability (Formerly Refresh Houston). http://www.meetup.com/webgraphicdesign/

A SEO group… http://www.meetup.com/Search-Engine-Optimization-SEO-Houston/

Perhaps make this group a CSS, Javascript, Jquery, HTML…. and subjects like Responsive Design, Grid Layout, Mobile, etc….

Subject: Re: [css-56] Keep our meetup going

Hey Y'all,

To give a little background - this group was originally started as a compliment to Refresh Houston. We used to have monthly meetings with guest speakers - bringing in everyone from Molly Holzschlag & Matt Mullenweg - to hometown heroes like Kelsey Ruger & Aaron Baxter. Meetings had anywhere from 30 - 80 attendees and were held at places like the Oak Room at Stag's Head or the PopLabs Office.

Over time - our community began to expand beyond just Web Design and into Social Media, Mobile App Development, and Social Entrepreneurship. This gave birth to other events and outlets (including the opening of several co-working spaces like Caroline Collective) and the CSS Meetup Group as well as Refresh Houston became less of a focus. I believe a lot of the original organizers - myself included - started taking on other projects like Ignite, TEDx & more.

Currently, I reside in Boulder, CO (the Happiest, Healthiest, Most Well-Educated city in America) - and so that's a big part of why I stepped down as an organizer. I'm sure the other organizers have similar reasons. I don't think it was burn-out as much as it was an evolution and shift in focus for the former community.

  Hope that helps!

Cheers,
-E

Leaders of groups can get burned out for a lot of reasons, and many
times its not related to lack of interest or even being too busy.  The
amount of "input" and incoming email can be quite overwhelming.  Many
people are very interested in providing "opinions" and "advice" but
are not interested in the day-to-day chores.

In the 2 groups I run and 2 groups I help organize, I have learned
that if someone offers their opinion, or offers to help do something
and then does not do it, it has a very significant negative impact on
everyone -- especially the organizer.

There are a lot of "You should do XYZ ... " people out there, and very
few "I can help by doing XYZ" people.  Those things get old, and
organizers who don't manage that kind of input end up burned out in a
short period of time.
