Many teams struggle with the fact that software is fundamentally difficult to estimate, because so much of what we do is new. This often leads to missed deadlines, failed sprints, death marches, and other bad things.
This month we'll focus on how to design your technical process to give business more predictability in your delivery. Matt Story, our speaker, has done some very interesting work to optimize his process to give business confidence bands as to when certain features will be delivered. He can tell them with remarkable accuracy when a particular feature will be delivered, including statistical bands around the likelihood of delivery on a certain date.
We have heard this talk before, and found it both fascinating in terms of lessons we can take back to our team, and the sheer geekiness of some of the stuff he came up with.
MATT STORY, Director of Engineering, Axial
Matt leads the Axial Corps of Engineers, responsible for developing the company’s technical vision and building the team of technologists to execute the company’s strategy. Prior to Axial, he was the Infrastructure Lead at Tablet Inc, a travel e-commerce website. Matt’s passions include developing operating systems, with open-source contributions to the FreeBSD Operating System and the Bash UNIX shell. His technical interests and proficiencies include File-Systems, Queueing, Socket Programming and Inter-System Communication (SOA). He received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of Chicago.
