1st Day Hike-Pocohantas S.P. (Local Hike, 3 Miles, Moderate)

Now that the Champagne is gone and the holidays are almost behind us, let's start 2014 off by spending it in our favorite place to be--outside!

Virginia State Parks are offering First Hikes at every park on January 1st.  We will attend the hike being held at Pocahontas.  This hike should be fairly short and easy--it's only 3 miles.  The description says it's "very hilly" so I am rating it as a moderate...but it should be fairly easy.  If you are new to the group, this is a great way to meet some other members and find out what our group is all about.

Dogs are also welcome on this hike!!

This hike will be led by the staff of Pocahontas S.P.--and is open to the public.

The "Friends of Pocahontas" group will be providing light refreshments after the hike.  You will probably also want to bring a snack and some water for the trail.

We will park at the Food Lion outside the park at the intersection of Iron Bridge and Beach Road and carpool into the park together since there is a parking fee to get in (3.00).

From the website: "Our first hike of 2014 will be on linked sections of 5 trails. It will take us through the forest between and alongside the southern edges of Swift Creek and Beaver lakes. Along the way we will see a bit of park history, including an old home site chimney and a Depression-era dam and kiln.

This very hilly 3 mile hike is not recommended for children under 5 without a child backpack/carrier. Most of the trail is gravel, dirt and there are exposed tree roots.

The Friends of Pocahontas State park will provide light refreshments and hot apple cider after the hike.

The hike is free but there is a parking fee unless you have an annual parking pass for Pocahontas State Park. Contact the park office if you want to purchase an annual parking pass."

Hi Daniel. We usually work out the carpooling when we meet. Just look for a big group standing around in the Food Lion parking lot.

What time should we be at FoodLion parking lot if the hike starts at 9:30?

    December 30, 2013

    • Kim

Hi Nancy, the hike actually starts at 10. So meeting at 9:30 allows us time to meet and carpool into the park.
