DWRT Metric Marathon

For easiest access to the City Hall Park fountain, enter the park at Broadway and Park Place. Or Park Row and Beekman.

This is a 26.2km (~16 miles) that will roughly simulate the NYC Marathon course.  For information on other groups that do marathon simulators, please read here:

http://running.competitor.com/2012/08/training/workout-of-the-week-the-simulator_14385

As the article says, this is a good opportunity to test out your hydration and fueling methods for the marathon.

Pace: 5% slower than marathon goal pace, i.e. +18-36sec/mile

Route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5661918

Eileen no worries you won't be alone or get lost. We'll be split into pace groups beforehand and the official pacer knows the route.

    Scott/Matt-
If we are training for a half marathon how do you suggest we take this run? Progression to hmp? Or middle miles at hmp?

    August 20, 2013

    • Henrietta A.

Emily! REST!! And meet us for brunch afterwards :)

      1 · August 22, 2013

    • Scott B.

Emily: Recommendation even for half marathon specialists is to do this at marathon pace + 5%. If you don't think you can bring yourself to go that slow, it would be smarter to do fewer miles. You can pick up one of the pacing groups in Queens Plaza (mile 9.3) and do 7 miles at a faster clip -- the first pacing group will pass through at around 9:20 or so.

    UPDATES:

    * All details are confirmed for Saturday morning. We start at 8am from City Hall Park -- please DO NOT BE LATE!

    * Course is identical to last year. We'll bring printed maps, but it would help to check the course in advance.

    * Can you volunteer by leading a pace group? Or do you want to help at the starting area before running? Or can you help in other ways? Please fill out this form:
    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1OmoIq6gwXPnxGi3uxBpw3rXAlz5Teow12GfIWazHp40/viewform

(If you already filled out the form to volunteer, we'll be in touch with you by Wednesday -- thanks!)

    * Targeted pace is 18-36 seconds per mile slower than goal marathon pace. This is still a solid effort for 16 miles, so make sure you prepare well by not overdoing your training on Thursday and Friday.

    * Wear the gear you expect to have on race day. When in doubt, just wear your Whippets uniform so others will recognize you.

    * We have a bag drop/pickup -- but PLEASE PACK LIGHT!

Hey Jessica, the best way to calculate it is take the total number of seconds of your goal pace (9x60=540 seconds) x 5% = 27 seconds. Add that to your goal pace so you'd run 9:27 pace on this run.

    August 18, 2013

  • Matthew

Hey all, since we moved this run up earlier than it's traditionally done, we're going to suggest doing goal pace plus 5% instead of goal pace. Sort of early to do a run this long at goal marathon pace. Let Scott or me know if you have any questions.

    August 17, 2013

    • Scott B.

Exactly -- what Matt said. We'll remind everyone on the morning of the event that even though we may organize you based on your marathon goal pace, you should actually run it at 18-30 seconds slower per mile (+5%).
