Subject of Discussion: Testimony as Submission, Not Truth
In Mormonism, a “Testimony” is not just a personal belief—it is a required loyalty oath, regularly renewed in monthly meetings. Members stand and declare, “I know the Church is true,” “I know Joseph Smith was a prophet,” “I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God.”
But this is not knowledge. It is ritualized certainty—a substitute for inquiry, a posture of deference to Church authority. Once a person declares belief as “knowledge,” their mind is closed. Doubt becomes sin, and questions become threats. It marks the point at which the Church no longer has to argue its case—because the believer has promised never to question it again.
