I prefer the beach during the summer but NOW is the season for backpacking!
At the same time, it looks like there's more demand for beginner trips than there is supply so this will help fill that need. If there's interest, we can have informal classes and discussions on outdoor skills, e.g. how to read a map, basic land navigation, finding clean water, building a fire, astronomy, etc.
Day 1: ~6.5 miles and approximately 5 hours of partially strenuous hiking and challenging, rocky terrain.
8-10 am Depart from Centreville Park and Ride. Drive to Scothorn Gap Trailhead.
10 am- Arrive at trailhead and promptly start backpacking. It's a steep two miles uphill to the top of the ridge before we proceed to Strickler Knob.
1:30 pm - Lunch at Strickler Knob.
2:30-4 pm - Descend 2.09 miles down eastern side of Middle Mountain to Gap Run Trail. Ascend Gap Run Trail to Peach Orchard Gap
4 pm - Scout for suitable campsite. Setup camp. Gather firewood. Dinner.
6 pm - Watch sunset (6:15 pm) on Duncan Knob.
Evening - Stargazing (depending on the weather). Smores.
Day 2: 3.21 miles back to the cars.
Morning - Breakfast, strike camp, & walk back to the cars. It's an easy 3.21 miles and mostly downhill. Drive back to Centreville/home.

Please print the maps for your own reference. Bring compasses if you have them.
Please make sure you're equipped with the 10 essentials (http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ultralight-backpacking-checklist.html#TheTenEssentials).
Please pack light. It's a lot easier to walk when you're not weighted down like a pack animal.
