New Years Eve Adventure and Party!

  • Dec 29, 2012 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Winter backpacking trip in the gorgeous Dolly Sods/Seneca Creek areas while stars are out in full force and the mountains are wearing one of her best dresses - Pure White Snow.

THIS IS NOT A CABIN/CAR CAMPING TRIP.

For most, this is some of the most desirable areas to backpack in our region and we know it better than any other group! So depending on weather maybe snow shoes/cross country skis will be required, so cross your fingers for this to happen as these areas get more snow than any other places in our area!

The more wilderness the better, so we will either go to Dolly Sods or Roaring Plains Wilderness areas or Seneca Creek Backcountry depending on the size of the group (can't have more than 10 in a group for wilderness areas). If we chose to stay together we will have to go to Seneca Creek, which has even better camping areas than Dolly Sods and is actually better suited to snowshoeing and cross country skiing, but no matter where we go will enjoy the grand tour of all the highlights our group knows so well, since we do the trail maintenance in all 3 of these areas.

This is a "cold winter weather" back-country backpacking trip so PLEASE wear/bring subzero clothes/gear according to the season, and wear insulated gloves and boots if you have them. You will need at least a "0" degree sleeping bag as well. We will update the trip once weather and road conditions become known as we want everyone to be safe.

Because of special date of this event spirits/alcohol will be allowed within reason and yes, we will do a grand feast high up on the mountain as usual! So let's go have some winter fun on the highest part of the Eastern Continental Divide in our home area away from home!

More info/updates will be posted soon.

Check the calendar- as we will update this event with everybody's input and once weather can be forecast. You can rent snowshoes/cross country skis from REI in Columbia, MD or Whitegrass in Canaan Valley, WV.

One tough trip, especially on the way in. Was very impressed with the positive mental attitude of the people there. Look forward to the next one without reserving a cabin in advance - cabin was fun, though.

Hmmmm, I actually thought it was a very refreshing little romp in the snow on Sat ! Sorry you had such a tough time Neal. Maybe you should try a newbie backpack ?

You were obviously not carrying enough stuff! I think we could have added two bags of wine to your pack and maybe a year's supply of meat rub and Chunky soup! I hope you found the smoked salmon at the campsite!

Jim was in contact with the "powers-that-be" and made sure we had a super white New Year's. A wonderful time with a lot of Grade A people, like fire-starter extraordinaire, Hua. Thanks to all who contributed to the great eats and friendly, helpful companionship (and body warmth!!).

Epic adventure that will only add to the lore of this trip! Blizzard with 12" of snow, check; hikes in the snow that never seems to end, check; campsite that can not be beat, check; memories never to be forgotten, priceless!

The snow did not disappoint! What an introduction to Seneca Creek. From snowshoeing in through a snow storm... in the dark. To great campfires, hiking, food and friends. Looking forward to the next WV adventure! Proud to say that I am crazy.

Great trip, with gorgeous falls. Jim was a great cook also - loved the pork tenderloin. The only bad part was my stove blew up after years of faithful service. Posting pictures!

Hi Jim, I'm still brining wild rice & crystal light. Since we are headed there on sunday, What do you recommend for parking at Horton trail? Thanks! Carla

    1 · December 28, 2012

    • Jim N.

Carla, per my group email, park at the trail head. Please give me a call in the morning to go over everything, thanks.

      December 29, 2012

  • Jim N.

Hua, please give me a call in the morning as I never received your phone number, thanks.

    December 29, 2012

  • Hua D.

OK, Guys, here are some idea about food for group dinner: Main dish--Hot dogs, subs, wraps, PBJ, chicken wings, legs, or chips, mashed potato powders (Just add hot water at campsite).....Desert---candies, Chocolates, cup cakes, brownies....Drink---any kind fruit powders, ice tea powders (Just add cold water at campsite). Everyone will bring their own silverware, drinking cup and napkin.
Let me know what kind food you would bring. (Just want to make sure that we are not all just eating chocolate for dinner) If we have 30 people, we probably need15 people bring food other than desert.
Of course, Jim is going to check into the beef tenderloins. That could feed at lease 6-8 people.
So far, we have one desert from David on my list.

    December 20, 2012

    • Jim N.

I bought a large Pork tenderloin for everyone participating and will season it before grilling it over the fire.

Anyone bringing GMRS/FRS walkie talkies? They can be fun. Any one that has channel 22 is a high power GMRS unit. Lottsa folks use em for skiing. Our tests in the Tetons showed that the GMRS ones will go about 7 mile maximum in the mountains (despite the 30 mile rating on the box). But still 7 miles line of sight is all we'd ever use....

There is only 3" of snow currently on the ground with up to 5" more today where camp is, with none forecast after today through New Year's Day, so no snowshoes required. Just make sure you have gaiters, good long johns, and at least a "0" degree sleeping bag is all I would recommend. Lows of 16 to 18 with highs 26 to 32 degrees, which is good so nothing will be melting. I will send out an email tonight with all the details. Weather report here:

    December 27, 2012

    • Jim N.

So enough for snowshoes if you have them, but not so much it will keep you from going if you do not have snowshoes. In addition once we get to camp there are great places to XC ski, so if you have them, bring them!!!

      December 27, 2012

  • Jim N.

Ok, it's official, Seneca Creek has at least twice as much snow as Dolly Sods, 6-12" vs. 2-4".

    December 26, 2012

    • Jim N.

Ok, Thursday 2 PM update has 12 to 16" of snow in Seneca Creek and 6"-7" in Dolly Sods, so if you have snowshoes, bring them! If you don't no worries just posthole behind the snowshoe people. Just flurries from here on out but lows of about 14 each night, so please be prepared so you sleep warm!

We'd call Jim with the head count, then head straight to the point he directs us on the trail head. We are flexible on Saturday departure time.

Jim, where is Seneca Creek? Checking maps (which map applies?) Not the one in Md near potomac I assume. If you run outta options that will take our group, perhaps New Germany state park would take us. They have Great cross country skiing and even local rental. But best to check the drinking rules there. Federal parks allow it, Md state parks usually don't. So it might be a non starter. see http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/newgermany.asp

I know a few people cannot make it until Sunday, so will have a Sunday option for this event. Please note I am carefully watching the weather and will check road conditions before making any decisions on exactly where we go and the route. Those of you who know me understand I am extremely thorough in my planning and preparation for the group, so we are prepared for the conditions and can simply go out and be spontaneous and have a great time. That being said I view this as a group event, so we all have a voice and together will make this an awesome event! We need to start to plan the NYE Party as well since we only have about another 10 days to go...and of course group dinners!
