Cross Country Skiing!

  • Jan 11, 2013 · 9:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is one of those fun adventure trips we sprinkle in to shake things up a bit! We will rendezvous on the mountain for some fabulous cross country skiing at Whitegrass in Canaan Valley, WV next to....you guessed it, Dolly Sods! If you are tough enough to ski up the mountain and back you can even visit there as well! We will go to Whitegrass for a day of learning and enjoying cross country skiing in the best locale in the East at group rates ($12 day fee, $12 rental, $10 group lesson)! If you prefer a little downhill skiing on Friday night you can do that at Cannan Valley Resort (see link below). For Apres Ski entertainment we will enjoy a great evening of music and fun at the Purple Fiddle. Finally, if we have enough energy left, maybe a nice hike to another one of my hidden gems on Sunday morning!

We will meet at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas, WV on Friday night for some great mountain music and hostel like comfort ($20+/night, see details below for costs) or reserve one of their guest rooms, link here: The Purple Fiddle. Beds and rooms fill up fast and it has been recommended that those wishing to stay here, book as soon as possible. If you wish, you may also stay at Blackwater Falls or Canaan Valley State Park Lodges or Cabins. There is also winter camping at Canaan Valley State Park with hot showers as well, but expect the wind chill to be 0 F or below! You will need to sign up here and make reservations at the Purple Fiddle or elsewhere on your own.

I am currently limiting this to a lucky 20 people to see how it goes. We need a minimum of 8 people to get the group rate and must book a reservation for our group ahead of time. If it generates a lot of interest, maybe we can make it larger....maybe! This trip is similar to Bridge Day, which was wildly popular and now a Washington Backpackers Annual Event! So let's saddle up for another grand adventure in winter this time, with lots of fresh air and exercise, great music, food and party with some of the best friends you will ever meet!

Had a great time skiing, partying, eating, and hiking. Everyone's contribution to the meals was fantastic. Thanks for sharing. Jim and Hollis deserve kudos for organizing a great weekend. The cabins were very elegant.

This weekend was a blast. Hope for more snow next time, but there was enough to still have fun and we got some hiking in, the weather was awesome (including the late night fog), and the people couldn't be beat! Thank you everyone for making this event so much fun and filling me with such delicious food :)

Loads of fun. What we lacked in snow we more than made up for in good times! The XC skiing was fun, the top of the mountain was gorgeous. Loved the après ski hiking and Seneca Rocks. Good weather, great people, wonderful memories

Just in case anyone is planning on a late departure:
The Dulles Corridor Metrorail construction will close all lanes of westbound I-66 between the Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) and Leesburg Pike (Route 7) from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday, Jan. 7, through Saturday, Jan. 12, due to work on the overhead bridges (guideway) crossing the highway. Detour: Exit to westbound Route 267, then take the exit to southbound Route 123, exit to southbound I-495, and then exit to westbound I-66.

Hey guys I just found out I am having an issue with my car and won't be able to make it. I could probably carpool with someone, but the main issue would be getting back in time on Sunday to pick my car up for work on Monday. I have a spot reserved for one of the cabins if anyone would like to go in my place.

    January 10, 2013

    • Brandon S.

Sorry guys... Wish I could've made it

      January 10, 2013

    • Steve M.

Booo. What time on Sunday do you need to be back? Many places will let you pick up your vehicle after hours as long as you make good on your payment. =\ I'd be happy to give you a lift if you can make it.

How about change the cabin #14 to #13. The #14 is like a unlucky number, and people just trying to get out there. I am drop out too, and going to the camping area..NOOOO, just kidding!! Lets bring swimming suit just in case.... Think about how there would be beautiful have a spring in January. It was like Maya prediction----Something serious is going on...

If anyone is still looking for a place to stay, I'm staying at the Guest House next to the Purple Fiddle. The room has 2 double beds. Cost would be $20/night per person.

    January 9, 2013

    • maureen

Amy, one of the beds is yours. And if someone else doesn't mind sharing a double bed, then there is room for one more.

      January 9, 2013

    • Amy

Maureen, I have an opportunity to stay at the cabins. Sorry to backout of the bed, but I am driving a car load of other cabin residents. I hope it doesn't mess you up, but it sure makes it easier on me to not have to drive back and forth picking people up. I think Nazzareena was looking for a bed...

What should we plan for lunch on Saturday? Should we bring food for the trail or will be be eating somewhere?

    January 9, 2013

    • Jim N.

We always are on our own Hollis since we will be on the go. There is a good vegetarian cafe at Whitegrass if you don't want bring anything. I normally just bring something in my day pack like french bread, hard cheese, smoked salmon or tuna, etc.

      January 9, 2013

  • Jim N.

I need to know how many first time XC skiers we have here and your boot size to pass the information onto Whitegrass so they are prepared for us on Saturday. We will start a list in this writeup along with your boot size so we can both check and be sure it is correct.

    January 8, 2013

    January 5, 2013

    • Rachel

Kathleen, I decided to carpool with Amy, who's leaving later, because I wanted to have some more time in the afternoon. So I no longer need a ride from you. Thanks though!

      January 9, 2013

    • Kathleen

Roger that -- and thus I retain maximum flexibility in my schedule ;p. Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!

Latest weather report has Saturday with a high of 59 and partly sunny, which beats all the rain on Friday and some on Sunday:
    http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Davis&state=WV&site=PBZ&textField1=39.131&textField2=-79.4665
I always visit Blackwater Falls and we will try to hike locally to another local and beautiful area as well, so come prepared to hike in the mud on Sunday.

    January 9, 2013

Another Susan L looking for a ride, here. I'm happy to come to whatever metro station is best for you. I could leave meet by 3:30 or so depending on the station. (I'm leaving from the White House area.) I can pitch in for gas, and bring snacks too :)

Now that the weather outlook is warm, does anyone want to camp at canaan valley? hot showers and cheap: $20 for up to 6 ppl on a campsite. i can drive up to 6; since it's going to be too warm for downhill skiing, my family is staying home.

  • Frank

Amanda and I will be arriving Friday morning. When/where is everyone meeting Friday night/Saturday morning? Looks like everyone is coming at different times and staying different places. Is there a rendezvous point? Thanks!

    January 8, 2013

    • Jim N.

Frank that is why I posted Purple Fiddle at 8 PM on Friday. We need to get people there to grab seats by 7 PM but Kirsten is ditching me for Kelly so they will be up there early. I am getting all the information from Whitegrass, hopefully today as the number of people seems to have finally stabilized. When I get the information from them, will send out an email to everyone so we all have the details. Regardless of the warm up and slushy skiing, it will still be better than last year with no snow at all...plus a great party up on the mountain with so many fun people!

      January 8, 2013

    • Frank

      Awesome! See you there!

      January 8, 2013

  • Jim N.

Please note, Whitegrass will still hit us with a $20 day use fee probably, so be prepared for that...as nothing in life is truly free! ;-) However still pretty darn inexpensive and fun with the right attitude, as rain never bothers the veterans of this group

    January 8, 2013

  • Jim N.

Ok, everyone here is the link you need to go to for information about winter trails day extravaganza:
    http://www.snowlink.com/wintertrails.aspx
Please print off the form, fill it out and bring it with you. Please note if you are not used to being outside in the winter, bring a good hat that will keep you dry even in the rain, gloves with a spare pair, and a waterproof outer layer, just in case it rains. Otherwise you can get away with a polar fleece as long as it is not windy and if it is, you will need a windproof outer layer. Long johns will depend on how easily you get cold. I would say running tights should be good for this Saturday and if you have snow pants, should not need anything underneath. Always have a base layer that does not absorb moisture to keep your skin dry and wick away the sweat. More to come so stay tuned, it's time to get excited!

There are 5 spots for the skiing portion open Xoco, but not for the cabin spots. However, there is some cabin movement so will have to get back with you....and you better be worth it, lol!

      January 3, 2013

    • Xoco

Jim, I'm DEFINITELY worth it. But thankfully there will be no extra leg work as my plus one bailed. Thank you for being so flexible though, its really appreciated.

I very much need a ride out there! I will be able to pitch for gas, as well as tasty snackies for whoever is driving. I get off at 5ish so I could make it out to Vienna by 6 or 6:30. Eternally grateful!!

    January 7, 2013

It looks like you guys picked the right weekend for this. Lessons and rentals are free for first timers. Have a look at this link for the details. Whitegrass is one of the participating resorts. Of course, this may mean it will be particularly crowded on Saturday so early arrival is probably advised. http://www.snowlink.com/wintertrails.aspx
