Our Syrian War & Regime Change livestream program will provide an overview of current events through the historical and contemporary context of the conflict.
During the program, we welcome you to join us for an online Q&A with your hosts and fellow participants via.
The Syrian Civil War, a devastating conflict that erupted in 2011, has transformed a once-vibrant nation into a tragic landscape of strife and suffering. Born from the flames of protest against authoritarian rule as part of the wider Arab Spring, the war quickly spiraled into a complex web of regional and global powers vying for influence, while civilians caught in the crossfire bore the brunt of the violence. The war appeared to reach a stalemate around 2020 with Assad’s government controlling the majority of the country directly and, when combined with his functional alliance with the SDF (Kurds) in the northeast, over 85% of the territory. However, in November 2024, the situation shifted profoundly with Turkish-backed groups led by HTS (Hayat Tahrir ash-Sham) managed to overthrow Assad’s government and form a transitional entity.
This program will discuss what these changes may mean for Syria’s future and the future of the wider Middle East.
This program is hosted by our friends Richard Sassoon, Aaron De Los Reyes, and Zakhar Suleymanov from the "History Mostly Ancient Discussions" Meetup group.
