Second Battle of Manassas - 150 Years + 3 Months

Hi Everyone,  The weather forecast for Saturday looks good, sun and temperatures warming up to the 50s.  I've had some questions about where to meet and how long the hike will last.

DIRECTIONS to Meet-Up point  -- We're meeting at the battlefield park visitor's center.
To get to the visitor's center for the Manassas Battlefield National Park: drive out I-66; exit VA 234 / Sudley Road NORTH to the battlefield; visitor's center is about 1 mile from the freeway on the righthand side.

DURATION -- I'm planning on walking the Park Service's 2nd Manassas Trail, which the website says is 6 miles long.  Plan on 9 am to noon.  Bring water and appropriate shoes for walking on dirt trails - we may hit some muddy spots.  I've uploaded the park trail map.  If you need to leave early, print it out and you can choose a place to split off and head back to the visitor's center.

CAR POOLS -- Vienna Metro Station is a good place to gather for car pools. I'm willing to give a ride to some people coming out of DC or North Arlington.

It was too hot to walk around the battlefield in summer, but touring the area should make for a nice fall walk. The unfinished railroad bed is one of the nicer portions of the park.

While we were hiking there was a discussion about which battles had the most casualties. This is what I found:
    1. Battle of Gettysburg - PA July 1-3, 1863 in Gettysburg, 51,000 casualties 2. Battle of Chickamauga - GA between September 19-20, 1863. 34,624 casualties 3. Battle of Spotsylvania Court House Occurring between May 8-21,1864, in VA. 30,000 casualties

    4. Battle of the Wilderness - in VA between May 5-7, 1864. 25,416 casualties. 5. Battle of Chancellorsville - in VA from May 1-4, 1863. 24,000 casualties 6. Battle of Shiloh Between April 6-7, 1862 in Tenn. Approx 23,746 men died.

    7. Battle of Stones River occurred between December 31, 1862-January 2, 1863 in TN. 23,515 casualties

    8. Battle of Antietam occurred between September 16-18, 1862 in MD. It resulted in 23,100 casualties. 9. Second Battle of Bull Run between August 28-30, 22,180 casualties 10. Battle of Fort Donelson between February 13-16, 1862 in TN. 17,398 casualties

Hi folks - I'm still looking for a ride from DC (Valerie, I haven't heard back from you, but if you're out there...please send me an e-mail!) Otherwise, is anyone else leaving from DC? Thanks!

Hi everyone! Excited for my first meetup with this group! My friend has 2-3 extra spots in their car, depending on how cozy/friendly people want to be. We'll be leaving from Gallery Place/Chinatown. Shoot me a message if you need a ride and we can coordinate!

Hey John, I am actually driving to this one instead of taking metro. Where are we meeting at the Battlefield? I have never been there, so you need to be specific! What time?
If anyone needs a ride, I am happy to take you. I live in Alexandria, near the 395. Send me an email -- [masked] with your contact info and we can figure it out.

Hi everyone - I'm not an organizer, but just throwing this out there: it appears that this weekend will be the last weekend for ranger-led historic tours of Harpers Ferry. From the Park's website, it appears that there are a few really interesting hikes/tours being offered. On Sunday, there is a mile long hike from the upper regions to the lower town, stopping at various mansions (apparently), and later in the day a tour that pertains to the John Brown raid. On Saturday, there is a tour pertaining to the battle of 1862. I'm just throwing this out to the group - if enough folks were interested, perhaps the group could do an "impromptu," informal meetup on Saturday or Sunday. Feel free to chime in....
