EX2 Cranky Monkey MTB Race #1 - Schaeffer Farms

Jim Harman and his event management company, EX2 Adventures, has been busy making another monkey very cranky! No, there is no need to call PETA! This “cranky monkey” has a entirely different kind of crank to grind when is comes to the EX2 Adventures Cranky Monkey Mountain Bike Racing Series. This three-race-event is back for round ten starting in Schaeffer Farms, Germantown, MD on August 5th, 2012, and will take mountain bike races all over Northern Virginia before it is through!

Since 2003, the EX2 Cranky Monkey MTB races have been crowd favorites considering they have already challenge thousands of mountain bikers in the local Washington DC metro area for a decade. With several classes based on age and/or ability levels to choose from, every skill level and type of rider can come out and have fun as one of these races. And even if you’re not the mountain bike racing type, every EX2 Cranky Monkey is a biking community event with plenty of social interaction, spectator visuals, and fun for the whole family!

For those who do like the racing side of the Cranky Monkey, all three races are based on the cross country (XC) format and include the unique privilege of having the second race at the Quantico Marine Corps Base (MCB) in Quantico, VA on August 26th, 2012, then concluding with both a third mountain bike race — and overall series championship event — at Fountainhead in Fairfax Station, VA on September 9th, 2012.

Some of the highlights of each venue include:

XC Race #1 – Schaeffer Farms, Germantown, MD
Given the popularity of the first two years at this venue, it is safe to say that racers love competing at Schaeffer! The trails at Schaffer Farms offer a very fun and wonderfully maintained mountain biking trail system which includes twisty single-track, open field riding, stream crossings, plenty of log ramps, and several steep hills. The 9-mile, one loop course will be completed one to three times, depending on your class. The first full lap will be preceded by a 0.5-mile prologue.

XC Race #2 – Quantico Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA
The absolutely stellar trail network on the Quantico Marine Corps Base is only open to civilian use on a few occasions each year and this is one of them! This fun course includes 9-miles of twisty singletrack, challenging hills, and long fire roads. The trail network at Quantico is wonderfully maintained and one of the best in the Northern Virginia area.

XC Race #3 – Fountainhead Regional Park, Fairfax Station, VA
The Fountainhead mountain biking trail system is being completely redesigned with awesome trails. The cross country course will consist of one, two, or three laps, depending on your class. Each lap will be 8- to 9-miles, preceded by a short road section to space the field out before entering the single-track. Get ready for an awesome challenge on these redesigned trails!

Race Expectations
EX2 runs a tight ships and each race provides you with a fun and challenging course design, limited race entry (450 total/race day or 150/race), professional race operations, wonderful volunteer support, aid stations stocked with water and Gatorade, medical support, accurate results, timely posting of results at the event and on the EX2 website, plentiful post-race food, electric atmosphere, great music, awards, and colorful t-shirts (one/person for the series). Make sure you register with EX2 soon and guarantee yourself a spot in this race. These races have limited entry and have sold out in the past!

I had a good time. Though like others mentioned, I did feel rushed once I had to wait for the road to clear for the runners to pass through in the morning. My rear gear cable broke and i was in single speed the last 3 miles of the race and then I decided to help a guy that broke his chain with my chain tool. That easily added another 10 min. to my time. I finished near the end but... it happens. Hopefully Quantico will be a different story.

At the last min I decided to participate, this was my 1st race and it did not go as planned. 1st I got stuck with the runners before the parking lot for like 15 min then I was assigned the wrong leg # which created confusion at the line I was told at 1st to go then I was called back to be cleared then I was told to go. I wasted a good 2 min on that and my group was gone. I did the best to catch up without burning up, I was able passed a few riders but the gap for the split was too great to overcome and to top it off; short of a mile I had a flat and decided to hike the bike. I believe my time was 1:14, I Am happy with the results giving the circumstance but I know I could do better. 1 under my belt, it was a lot of fun and I think I got bit by the monkey. See you at Quantico, Semper Fi.

The was a fast race with plenty of competition. But one wreck and 6-miles on a broken bike did not make it as fun as it could be. However, I look forward to doing race #2 at Quantico to make up for the mechanicals at Schaeffer.
