Please join us, Hatch IT and Stuck in the Sand for this FREE event for talks by Alan Swenson and Jonathan Street.

1. JSON Web Tokens with Flask

What in the world are JSON Web Tokens (JWT) and how can they make your Flask application or API more secure? In this talk we will discuss what JWT is, what it can do for you, and how to use it in your Flask application. It is intended for Flask users of any level (Beginners highly encouraged to attend) and even if you are not using Flask or even Python, JWT can be used in most other languages as well.

Meet Your Presenter:
Alan Swenson is Senior Audio Producer at Studio Center. He is responsible for delivering top tier audio projects for big name brands and politicians with the fastest turn around in the industry, in doing so he has developed and helped create proprietary software tools for the company to go from audition to final product faster than the competition. Outside of work, Alan loves to take in all of the wonderful DC Art and History museums, eat at amazing restaurants around DC and go to Nationals games when the weather is nice.

2. Cryptography: Adventures in best practices and hazardous materials

Cryptography is a vital and often invisible component in our lives. It helps us prove our identities, establish trust, and keep information secure. Although always important, often the best approach is handling cryptography outside our programs. HTTPS/TLS might be handled by the web server rather than our application and valuable analyses might be best secured using whole disk encryption. However, sometimes we must handle the cryptography ourselves. Fortunately, "There's a Package for That".

In this talk, Jonathan will demonstrate best practices for several different situations and review how easy the cryptography package makes implementing these. Finally, he will dive into the "hazardous materials" for when best practices don't quite fit our objective.

Meet Your Presenter:
Jonathan Street is a biomedical scientist studying kidney disease. He extensively uses python for data analysis and machine learning and has taught these subjects at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences at NIH. Jonathan is also one of the organizers for the DCPython meetup and has hosted the Project Night event since 2015.

We will have Food, Snacks, and Beverages
