  • DIEGO MARADONA screens with English subtitles and networking drinks

At CineExpat we screen foreign language films with English subtitles. This time, first in a long while, we're screening a documentary (in Spanish) called DIEGO MARADONA. ► Diego Maradona is a film by Asif Kapadia, about the life of the world famous Argentinian football player Diego Maradona. Based on over 500 hours of archive material, the films paints a unique portrait of a man many considered to be a football god. ► On July 5, 1984, 23-year-old Diego Maradona arrived at SSC Napoli. At that time the club had never won a major tournament, and were craving success. The charismatic Argentinian inspired his team and led Napoli to their first-ever league title. This turned him into a god in the eyes of many. ► The documentary tells a compelling story about the rise and fall of a great talent. Where the film breaks new ground even to Maradona devotees and hard-core fans of Italian and Argentine football is in highlighting the consequences of love, the Catch-22 of fame and the cannibalism it wreaks on the self. Maradona’s story is ultimately a tragedy. ► Asif Kapadia made a big impression with his documentary SENNA, about the life of Brazilian Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna. In 2016 he won an Oscar for AMY, about the singer Amy Winehouse who died in 2011. For the new documentary, he got Diego Maradona himself on board, who gave his full support. ► Join the host Katie for drinks prior to the film (from 19:45) in the cinema bar! • YOUNG AHMED screens with English subtitles and networking drinks

At CineExpat we screen foreign language films with English subtitles. 'Young Ahmed' is a Belgian drama from acclaimed directors the Dardenne Brothers. In 'Le Jeune Ahmed', awarded the prize for Best Director in Cannes, the Dardenne brothers (Deux jours, une nuit; Le gamin au vélo) tell the story of Ahmed, a rapidly radicalising 13-year-old Muslim boy in Belgium, with great empathy and respect. The young Ahmed (Idir Ben Addi) tries to find himself, stuck between two worlds, in Le Jeune Ahmed. On the one hand there is the clear and “pure” world in the mosque. On the other, there is the messy Western world at home. The clear language of his inflexible Imam (Othmane Moumen) seems to hold the solid ground Ahmed is so desperately looking for. All “impure” and “apostates” are bad, even if they are your dear mother, sister and teacher. As Ahmed becomes more and more absorbed, the people around him watch him slip away. After a serious incident, the question is whether Ahmed can be saved. • THE WILD PEAR TREE screens with English subtitles and networking drinks

We follow Sinan, who has dreamed of being a writer ever since he was young. After graduating he returns home, to finish his first book. While he tries to get his book published, he also has to deal with his father’s deteriorating indulgence into gambling. In 'The Wild Pear Tree', Nuri Bilge Ceylan manages to combine a coming-of-age story with pressing modern day issues in Turkey, as the old and new generations clash. Torn between the obsession with money, the need for artistic freedom, the conflict between the old and the new generation: Ceylan interweaves all these issues in Sinan’s story.
