Worum es bei uns geht

Let's have a discussion of a (usually fiction) book over a glass of wine/ pint/ Ribena once a month. We try to read everything from classics to contemporary - all that matters is that you love books and talking about them! And getting to know new people at the same time...

We have a website for our book suggestions and voting! https://oxfordwineandbooks.co.uk/

We have a GoodReads page (https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/151685-oxford-wine-books-for-20s-30s).

The Booker Prize Special

The Chequers

It's time for something a little different. The Booker Prize shortlist is out, and it's your choice which of the 6 books you'd like to read. The full short list is here: https://thebookerprizes.com/fiction The winner will be announced on 14th October, so either you can wait until then to read the winning book, or choose another that interests you. We will discuss each of the entries, and we can argue which of the books we believe deserved to win the prize! Some big names this year, so should be an interesting one... Some of the shortlisted books are relatively long so we are giving everyone enough notice if they wanted to get ahead. Look forward to seeing everyone, let the debates begin! Special event - Author talk with Anita Frank

St Aldate's Tavern

Exciting news! In collaboration with Mostly Books bookshop in Abingdon, we've been offered the opportunity to host an author talk with debut author Anita Frank to discuss her debut novel "The Lost Ones". Anita is a local author and it would be great to discuss her upcoming fiction! There will be an interview where I will be talking to Anita about her novel, and then it will be opened up for a Q&A session with the rest of the group! Here's more about Anita's debut novel: https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780008341220/the-lost-ones/ "Reeling from the death of her fiancé, Stella Marcham welcomes the opportunity to stay with her pregnant sister, Madeleine, at her imposing country mansion, Greyswick – but she arrives to discover a house of unease and her sister gripped by fear and suspicion. Before long, strange incidents begin to trouble Stella – sobbing in the night, little footsteps on the stairs – and as events escalate, she finds herself drawn to the tragic history of the house. Aided by a wounded war veteran, Stella sets about uncovering Greyswick’s dark and terrible secrets – secrets the dead whisper from the other side…" The book releases on 31st October. There will be copies available on the night to buy from the author, kindly supplied by Mostly Books. Please remember we run these events on a voluntary basis, for special events such as this, we would appreciate donations as always! They allow us to try and trial these kind of events and also to be able to pay the meetup fees. Hope this will be of interest to many of you, and look forward to seeing you in November!

Notes on a Scandal by Zoë Heller

Benötigt einen Veranstaltungsort

Second place book from last vote. Here's the descriptive bit: 'Schoolteacher Barbara Covett has led a solitary life until Sheba Hart, the new art teacher at St. George's, befriends her. But even as their relationship develops, so too does another: Sheba has begun an illicit affair with an underage male student. When the scandal turns into a media circus, Barbara decides to write an account in her friend's defense—and ends up revealing not only Sheba's secrets, but also her own.'
