Jung, Astrology, & Synchronicity

Lecturers: Robert and Elsbeth Diehl

Lecture Title:

Jung, Astrology, & Synchronicity:
Revisioning Divination for the 21st Century

Lecture description from the speakers:
Jung's interest in Astrology was diverse, longstanding, and surprisingly comprehensive. Jung was not primarily an astrologer, but was known for using horoscopes of patients to help with his analysis. He studied astrological symbols in his efforts to penetrate the mysteries of Alchemy. In his major work, AION, devoted to an exploration of the archetype of the Self, Jung suggests that astrological symbolism reveals key developments in Western history and Christian religion by tracing the Precession of the Vernal (Spring) Equinox through the constellation of Pisces. In his astrological marriage experiment, published in 1952, and as a part of his studies on synchronicity, Jung investigated the horoscopes of married couples using a statistical method to detect an a-causal correspondence at work in Astrology. The surprising and peculiar results of this study reveal a "secret mutual connivance" between the subjective and objective worlds, promoting the consideration of the cosmos as a unified field, an "Unus Mundus". We will explore these provocative concepts in Jung's intellectual legacy, as well as interpret Jung's own birth chart as an example of a symbolic representation of an individual's "daimon", "genius", or spiritual guide.

We have found the Huber method to be the most useful and sophisticated tool for psychotherapeutic assessment and application. We will introduce some of the more salient techniques of this system during our presentation.

I thought the meeting was very interesting. I rated it "great." Elsbeth and Robert have such a wealth of knowledge on the subjects, and very good speakers. I really appreciate their taking the time to share their deep understanding of Jung, archetypes, synchronicity and astrological psychotherapy.

The only suggestions I have to make it even better are at least one break, and I would also have liked more audience participation or some exercises for us to play with together to keep energy high, and also to facilitate meeting other attendees. I would also have liked to have short introductions at the beginning for two reasons: to know who is in the room, and also, again, to provide some facilitation for meeting others, and building community.

Thanks very much for making this happen, Chris.
