Book Club

If you are able to recognize bullshit when you hear it then come and share your knowledge with us when we talk about "On Bullshit" by Harry Frankfurt at book club on February 17.  (Note: This book is extremely short)

On a related subject we be talking about how to distinguish signal from noise in data sets when we discuss Nate Silver's The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail But Some Don't.

We will round out discussion by talking about Joe Haldeman's The Forever War.

The Secular Hub is not quite available yet, so we'll be meeting as usual at The Tattered Cover Book Store on Colfax at 2:00 pm.

Hope to see there!

For those curious, this came up in the dinner group after the book club. The phrase "begging the question" is a translation of the Latin phrase "petitio principii." A more literal translation would be "proposition of the beginning." It's the logical fallacy whereby the proof is assumed to be true only because the original statement is assumed to be true. Example: God exists because the Bible says he exists, and the Bible is the Word of God.
