We must learn and remember that executive functions are fundamental to all human cognition whether you have ADHD or not. Everyone can benefit from learning about them and how to develop them, but this is even more true in situations when folks without ADHD must live, work and teach with those who do. As Denver Metro CHADD presents another opportunity to learn about executive functions, we encourage you to invite anyone you know to join us and learn how to become more aware of executive functions for themselves and to bring compassion for those for whom these skills are more challenging.
For example, when students need help with executive function skills such as organization, time management, and planning, they're more likely to have late or missing assignments and procrastinate on long-term papers and projects. They may seem unmotivated or constantly frustrated by school.
Consequently, as with students, those with executive function challenges are often victims of misconception when teachers, employers and even parents (who might even have some understanding of ADHD) perceive their lack of focus as laziness or disinterest. However, executive function skills don't occur naturally—they're learned. Teaching ADDers the skills they lack helps them to succeed not just academically but in all areas of their lives. When supported by such teaching and a compassionate community of those also learned about executive functioning, ADDers can thrive through repetition, routine, self-advocacy, and staying active.
Brandon himself was diagnosed with ADHD at an early age, but it wasn’t until college that he fully recognized his brain did not work like those of his neurotypical peers. Since then, Slade’s goal has been to better understand the ADHD brain. After teaching special education for 12 years, he started Untapped Learning. Untapped’s mission is to help students with executive function challenges to develop the skills they need to succeed academically and beyond.
