East Portal Moffat Tunnel Snowshoeing

Get onto CO119 and drive south from Nederland to Rollinsville. From the middle of Rollinsville turn west onto the Rollins Pass Road (graded gravel). Continue about 8 miles. You will cross the railroad tracks twice under underpasses and twice at grade crossings. After you cross the RR tracks the fourth time bear left at the intersection for Rollins Pass and proceed to the large parking lot.

Carpooling is encouraged. Meet at Wooly Mammoth Lot Section BB at 8:00. Bring some cash for your driver.

We will snowshoe toward Forest Lake. The trail is generally in the trees but open areas (like the parking lot) are likely to be windy. Bring snowshoes and some way to attach them to your pack if we end up just hiking due to lack of snow. Traction devices (e.g. MicroSpikes) are recommended for hiking. This is a popular area and the trails are likely to be well packed and might be icy. There may, however, be some bushwhacking and trail breaking.

Starting elevation: 9220 ft (N 39°54.174'  x W 105°38.645')

Ending elevation: 10672 ft

Net elevation gain: about 1500 ft

Distance on the trail (round trip): about 6 miles

Time on the trail: 3 or 4 hours

Subjective difficulty: moderately strenuous

Bring lunch with you and plenty of water to drink. Dress in layers. Jeans and other cotton wear is not appropriate for this or any other winter trip.

Do not bring your dog, iguana or wolverine on this trip.

You engage in this activity at your own risk.

Is the plan to reach the forest lakes or just go up the trail a ways? It's ~8 miles RT to the lower lake according to various online sources), a little more for the more scenic upper lake - but I've never been, so I can't confirm. Also, anyone interested in carpooling from the Boulder REI at 8:20? We could meet the rest of the group at the trailhead.

Hi Bernice. I'm in Louisville and will be passing through Boulder on my way up if you want to carpool. Likewise, I'll check here before I leave. My number is[masked]

Nick, that's correct. Section BB is almost directly across from the Conoco gas station.
