This talk examines how the animal agriculture industry has responded to growing environmental concern by adopting increasingly sophisticated forms of greenwashing – including self-critique. Drawing on rhetorical and legal analysis, Dr. Stănescu, an associate professor of communication and a leading scholar in critical animal studies, examines how terms such as “natural,” “pasture-raised,” and “sustainably sourced” function less as meaningful disclosures and more as tools of misdirection – designed to deflect criticism while leaving industrial practices largely intact.
Through corporate case studies (including Cargill, Tyson, and Chipotle), the talk explores how marketing strategies exploit regulatory ambiguity and public concern to construct an illusion of reform. In doing so, it raises broader questions about the role of language in concealing environmental harm and the legal frameworks that allow such practices to persist.
Lunch and parking will be provided! Please register here.
