Build Your Own Computer Teaser Class

Interested in learning more about the guts of a computer? Then the "Build your Own Computer" class is for you!

The official classes start in September, but Artisan's Asylum is offering this free "teaser class." Just come in and see what the class is all about! It is not necessary to bring anything, we have plenty of materials on location at Artisan's Asylum.

This class is for you if you are:

Are you...

• Interested in learning more about the guts of a computer?

• Interested in a paradigm of computing that puts you in control of your computing?

• Want to have a good time while making your next computer?

Information on the full course can be found here:

@Mike, thanks for posting the directions (and thanks for using Open Street Map!)

**For those interested in starting a business or expanding their current one:** As well as individuals interested in learning more about computers and interested in alternatives to Windows and Apple, I would encourage business owners, entrepreneurs, and administrators at NPO's to try the class as well. The reason is, the knowledge from the class will help those people to start a scalable and fully-customizable technology infrastructure that can survive both the booms and busts of economic turns. Personally, I use this technology to run my daily business as a musician and could not be happier with it!

Thank you everyone for the questions! I hope that you can come to the teaser this Friday at 5:30. There, you will see a little bit what the class is about.

$179? If you could justify by adding more description, that would be really helpful

    • Devin

So the $179 helps with the following: 1) space -- Artisan's Asylum is a NPO and they use the revenue to pay for space, 2) compensation for teachers time, 3) give us a little bit of revenue to spend on hardware when needed.

What you get with the price: 1) An up-to-date operating system with the latest software (Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.), 2) A functional computer, 3) Knowledge to troubleshoot basic problems, 4) Classtime with knowledgable teachers and other motivated students.

It would be helpful to have more detailed description beyond just fix, assemble, install software. I went to Eventbrite link but the class outline there is not very helpful.

@Yarolslav As Julian describes above, the class is geared to people who are a) unfamiliar with the inner workings of a computer, b) interested in trying GNU/Linux in a low-pressure class-setting, or c) want to attend a class where they leave with a computer of their own.

@Tariq, the teaser class on August 26 is free. The full course which begins in September has a $179 fee. Information about the full course is included on the EventBrite page linked above. For more details, feel free to email Devin & Julian at [masked]. I'm sure they'd be happy to hear from you.
